On Saturday, the world’s longest heavy-duty steel arch bridge on China’s longest Yangtze River was completed.

The Shanghai-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge links Zhangjiagang and Nantong of east China’s Jiangsu province. The main span of the bridge is 336 meters.

Following are the pictures of closure of Tianshenggang Channel Bridge.

Yes this is the Hutong Yangtze Bridge, a heavy haul bridge that serves "three in one": Expressway, HSR, Intercity rail. Almost half a million tonnes of steel used, largest in the world. Schematic below:

I've been traveling on this Sutong Bridge over Yangtze River very often.....
Tens of bridges over Yangtze River make China a smaller country.....

Design and construction[edit]
With a span of 1,088 metres (3,570 ft), it was the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in the world in 2008-2012. Its two side spans are 300 metres (980 ft) each, and there are also four small cable spans. The bridge received the 2010 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award (OCEA) from the American Society of Civil Engineers.[1][2]

Two towers of the bridge are 306 metres (1,004 ft) high and thus the third tallest in the world. The total bridge length is 8,206 metres (26,923 ft). Construction began in June 2003, and the bridge was linked up in June 2007. The bridge was opened to traffic on 25 May 2008[3] and was officially opened on 30 June 2008.[4] Construction has been estimated to cost about US$1.7 billion.

The completion of the bridge shortens the commute between Shanghai and Nantong, previously a four-hour ferry ride, to about an hour.[5] It brings Nantong one step closer to becoming an important part of the Yangtze River Delta economic zone, and has further attracted foreign investors into the city. The bridge is also pivotal in the development of poorer northern Jiangsu regions.

The tower is an inverted Y-shaped reinforced concrete structure with one connecting girder between tower legs. The bridge deck is a steel box girder with internal transverse and longitudinal diaphragms and fairing noses at both sides of the bridge deck. The total width of the bridge deck is 41 metres including the fairing noses.

Just WOW :o: , can't comprehend this mega project, simply amazing. China a Kingdom of many things e.g. Bridges, HSR, Skyscrapers, Dams, Metro systems. China is transforming its massive landscapes while preparing for the 21st Century.

It will be the largest cable-stayed bridge when completed.
Hutong, Sutong, etc, all the way to Nantong City!
All these giant Yangtze River bridges make Jiangsu Province really connected.
The definition of Yangtze River Delta economic zone therefore can be enlarged to reach Nantong, Taizhou, Yangzhou etc in Central Jiangsu.

We definitely need more such bridges connecting the south bank and north bank of Yangtze River which used to divide the country geographically. We need to further increase the density of the expressway network in the region.

just realized Shen-Hai expressway (沈海高速) refers to the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway!! I used to think it refers to Shenyang-Shanghai Expressway, and wondering why it called as 沈海, not 沈沪... How stupid I am!!! :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Yes Hutong Yangtze Bridge is truly mega, half a million tonnes of steel used, almost 10 times of Sydney Harbor Bridge, weights even far more than an entire navy fleet.

HSR+expressway on the same bridge will be the new norm!

World's Longest Cross-sea Bridge One Step Closer to Completion

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, soon to be the world's longest cross-sea passage, is one step closer to being completed.

A 2.7-kilometer tunnel, which had been dug through on Monday, has linked the Zhuhai part of the project, the Southern Metropolitan Daily reported on Tuesday.

Throughout this stage, working with the soft underground soil, engineers used pipes to hold the tunnel's structure, freezing the soil into place with specialised equipment to prevent water leakage.

Construction of the bridge began in December 2009 at Zhuhai.

The bridge and tunnel system, which span the Pearl River estuary, is important in integrating Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong.

The Y-shaped bridge starts from Lantau Island in Hong Kong and branches out to Zhuhai and Macao.

Major works on the 55-km bridge were completed in September 2016. The bridge is expected to be open to traffic by the end of this year.

Once in operation, the current four-hour drive from Hong Kong to Zhuhai will be reduced to less than an hour. All Pearl River Delta cities will then be within a reasonable commuting radius of Hong Kong.

Key part of world’s longest cross-sea bridge installed

GUANGZHOU: Chinese engineers have installed a 6,000-tonne key structure of the world’s longest cross-sea bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau.

The wedge – measuring 12m long and weighing more than 25 Airbus A380 jets – was lowered to connect the immersed tubes of the underground tunnel of the bridge, said Lin Ming, chief engineer of the island and tunnel section of the bridge.

The 55km bridge connects Zhuhai in Guangdong province with Hong Kong and Macau.

Before the wedge was installed yesterday, 33 immersed tubes, each 180m long and weighing 80,000 tonnes, had been installed.

“There is only one wedge for a tunnel and we cannot afford to fail in its installation. It took two years to prepare for today,” said Chen Yue, director of the engineers’ office of the bridge’s island and tunnel section.

The installation procedure took about six hours.

“The margin of error for the wedge is 1.5cm. We have to measure precisely the influence of wind, current and buoyancy force,” said Lin.

“It is like putting a needle through a hole – a truly unprecedented event in the history of transportation.”

The wedge would be welded and finished by June, he added.

The bridge will be open to traffic by the end of the year. It will cut travel time from Hong Kong to both Zhuhai and Macau from three hours on the road to a 30-minute drive. — China Daily/ Asia News Network

China inches closer to completing world's first 'rail above road bridge'

Engineers successfully joined together the two sections of the main arch of the Jinshajiang Bridge in Yibin city in Southwest China's Sichuan province on June 28, inching closer to completion after work began in December 2013.

The Jinshajiang River overpass, one of the key parts of Chengdu-Guiyang high-speed railway under construction, will be world's first rail-road combined bridge with railway line on top deck, according to CCTV.

The Jinshajiang Bridge, which will have a four-lane railway and a six-lane highway, is 1874.9 meters long, with a 336-meter-wide span on its main arch. The railway track will run 32 meters above the highway, the highest in the world.

A rail-road combined bridge usually has road on top. However, a road in Yibin will connect with the highway so the bridge faced height restriction. Also, considering the mountainous terrain in the area, building rail track on top meant less tunnels.

The Jinshajiang Bridge in Yibin city is part of the Chengdu-Guiyang high-speed rail, a 632.6-kilometer-long link connecting Southwest China's Chengdu city and Guiyang city.

The Chengdu-Guiyang high-speed railway is expected to open by December 2019. When completed, it would take only three hours to travel between the two cities from the current 12 hours.
