Awareness is necessary for any conservation purposes. I am from Abbottabad and now its a big sprawling city but years ago it was like a forest and the mountains surrounding the city had plenty of wild life. As a youth i had scaled all the surrounding mountains and walked around deep in the mountains. At times you would come face to face with a common leopard which used to be abundant in Muree,Galiyaat and nearby mountains but its now rare. The species itself is not endangered but Population in Pakistan is. The animal is much smaller than an adult human being and is always scared of humans. All you have to do is stand your ground and look in the eye of the animal and it will run away. that awareness wasn't/isn't there and people would fire at the animal when came face to face. That way many common leopards in out Mountains were killed unnecessarily because we intruded into its territory and got scared,killed it. Other thing is that at the time there were some game in the forest such as deer / wild rabbits and such,which the leopard could hunt. Now there is no deers left and wild rabbits are low in numbers,so the leopard only hunts monkeys. Tourists going to Muree and adolescent areas which is home to the Common leopard feed monkeys,so money troops remain close to human population or areas frequented by humans. The leopard follows and crosses path with humans which is assumed as the leopard stalking humans to hunt them. As a result the poor leopard is viciously tracked down and shot dead in Muree Galiyaat area.

Snow leopard is a larger animal and can kill an adult human but it lives too far up in the mountains. Humans killing its prey the mountain goats , Markhoor and such,causes starvation and the poor animal has to come down looking for food and ends up hunting a shepherd's flock. Again angering humans and animal being trapped and killed.
Another less known phenomena i have noted is "Kidnapping" of Snow leopard cubs by trekkers and local shepherds going up in the mountains looking for new pastures. What happens is that snow leopard moms go out on hunting trips leaving their cubs behind. Mom may not return for a day or two and a snow leopard cub may be seen alone in the mountains. That does not mean its been abandoned or lost. Mom will return,sniff the cub and find it. Thats how they raise their cubs. But Good Sumatran trekkers / shepherd assume that the poor snow leopard cub is lost and abandoned.pick it up and bring it to its misery in human custody. Has happened so many times.

Pakistan's snow leopard has extensive conservation programs dedicated to it and is beginning to do well now. The same polices are now being applied to the Makhoor.
By the way, Pakistan's Northern Areas was the first place that the Snow Leopard was filmed. Pakistan has the most active of all the populations of this legendary big cat, long may it stay that way inshallah.
