20 beautiful animals on the verge of extinction – one is from Pakistan

Scientists recognise that species continually disappear at a background extinction rate estimated at about one species per million per year, with new species replacing the lost in a sustainable fashion.

Today we’re living through the sixth great extinction, sometimes known as the Holocene extinction event.

But, as harmful as our forebears may have been, nothing compares to what’s under way today. Throughout the 20th century the causes of extinction – habitat degradation, overexploitation, agricultural monocultures, human-borne invasive species, human-induced climate-change – increased exponentially, until now in the 21st century the rate is nothing short of explosive.

When we hear of extinction, most of us think of the plight of the rhino, tiger, panda or blue whale. But these sad sagas are only small pieces of the extinction puzzle. The overall numbers are terrifying. Of the 40,168 species that the 10,000 scientists in the World Conservation Union have assessed, one in four mammals, one in eight birds, one in three amphibians, one in three conifers and other gymnosperms are at risk of extinction.

Markhor

The markhor straight out of a fantasy book and it’s easy to see why it is the national animal of Pakistan. His high status and incredible style surprise and they were a perfect target for trophy hunters and now there are only about 2,500 remaining.

Still has some distance to go , according to wikipedia it lists as "Near threatened (NT) – Likely to become endangered in the near future".
But snow leopard is an endangered one.

Looks more like a marco polo sheep. Horns of a markhoor are not like that, they are twisted.

Markhor and Snow leopard conservation efforts are on the way. I don't know about Snow leopard but Markhor can be domesticated and raised on farms.
Some guys in Texas USA are doing this. they imported Markhor from Afghanistan and successfully bred the goat in Texas and now charge hunters for game shooting. Cant see why it cant be done in Pakistan. Wil be a good way of conservation.

Only 2500 remaining? Such utter shame!!!!

@IrbiS

These numbers are old even IUCN doesn't have fresh data as this 2500 quoted is their number. But population is said to be recovering and conservation even the status has changed in some Areas. A new census is required but I'm not that worried about Markhor now.

Pakistan too issues limited number of hunting permits for Markhor to the highiest bidders, for the old or sick animals as they don't serve any conservation effort.

I heard, even the snow leopard of Pakistan is on the verge of extinction?
What about Snow Leopard.View attachment 244369

Snow Leopard is endangered and it's the number 1 priority of Pakistani and WWF-Pakistan conservation efforts. They are so elusive and secretive that just collecting enough data is very challenging.

markhor and snow leopards no.s have been increasing..problem with snow leopard is loss of territorial freedom.
the reason for their improve numbers surprisingly has been trophy hunting..! talk about paradox.

every year old markhors are identified by community and trophy hunting lsicences are provided in very few no., the sum is then given to community itself, given the huge amount of money, commmunity prizes markhor alot and have been making sure their no. to go up.
snow leopard no. on other hand depends upon markhor no.
