Two suspected members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India or SIMI, were killed in an encounter today in Telangana's Nalgonda district, say police. A constable was killed and two other police personnel were also injured in the gunfight.

The two men - identified as Aslam and Zakir Hussain - were trying to escape the sealed state borders after killing a constable and a home guard shortly after mid-night on Wednesday at Suryapet town. The police team was conducting a routine check of vehicles, when the two reportedly opened fire on the security personnel.
The two men killed in today's encounter are believed to be part of group of five alleged SIMI operatives who escaped from a jail in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh in October 2013. Police allege that the two are suspected to have played a part in several crimes including a bank robbery in Karimnagar in February 2014, Chennai railway station blast of May 2014 and Bijnour blast in Uttar Pradesh.

The attackers, who reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident, were caught early today morning while trying to flee the state, say police.

Suryapet firing: accused duo shot dead, two policemen killed - The Hindu
Despite calls to surrender, the accused opened fire on policemen, resulting in exchange of fire.

Telangana police gunned down two armed assailants who killed two of their men at Suryapet in Nalgonda two days ago.

But in the fierce shoot out which took place around 7 a.m. at Janakipuram near Mothkuru mandal of Nalgonda district after a dramatic chase, one constable Nagraj lost his life while three other policemen - Inspectors - Balanagi Reddy, Gangaram and a SI Siddaiah were injured.

Mr. Reddy and Mr. Siddaiah have been shifted to a private hospital here and both are said to be critical.

Initially, it was thought the accused were members of a robbery gang from Uttar Pradesh. However, investigators are now veering around to the view that these could be activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Earlier, the entire Telangana police were on high alert after a constable and a Home Guard were shot dead at Suryapet bus-stand on Wednesday midnight by the assailants. The Suryapet Inspector and another HG were also critically injured in that firing.

Killers had also taken away the carbine of one of the slain policemen. Police launched one of the biggest manhunts of recent times organising vehicle checks and frisking all over the State.

While they were clueless about the killers movements till Friday, the special police parties on the look-out for the duo learnt that the accused had snatched a bike from a villager at gunpoint at Janakipuram around 5 a.m.

Scores of police teams rushed to the village when the accused were spotted crossing some bushes. Despite calls to surrender, the accused opened fire on policemen, resulting in exchange of fire.

The gun battle continued for at least 30 minutes till the criminals were shot dead. But constable Nagaraju lost his life in the firing.

Meanwhile, Telenagana Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy visited Kamineni Hospitals at Nagole where the injured police officers have been admitted.

He also said they definitely belonged to an inter-State gang from Uttar Pradesh. However, he did not say whether the dead persons were terrorists except stating that investigations to ascertain their links with terror groups are on However, informed sources disclosed the police have identified the two dead persons as the two among the five terrorists, who had escaped from Khandwa Jail of UP last year. These escapees from the jail were stated to have links with SIMI outfit. It is also suspected that these five escapees from the UP jail were involved in a series of dacoities and bank robberies. Nalgonda stringer braves the odds to capture photos of SIMI operatives - The Hindu

Suspected SIMI operatives caught in action by photographer Srirangam Venkanna at Arvapally in Nalgonda district a couple of hours before they were killed.

A reporter-cum-photographer who generally reports on agriculture and development issues in and around Arvapally mandal in Nalgonda district, unexpectedly came across the two armed SIMI activists, and managed to take their pictures. But he did not know at that point of time that he would be the only person to capture pictures of these deadly gunmen since they were killed by the police exactly a couple of hours later at Janakipuram.

Srirangam Venkanna, a stringer for a vernacular news daily Sakshi at Arvapally, has won laurels not only from journalists but also from the citizens and police.

The police had been conducting search operations across the State since the past two days after the Suryapet incident on Thursday. At around 6.30 a.m., news broke of two persons moving close to Arvapally with weapons when Venkanna rushed to the spot without delay. He took out his digital camera from his bag upon seeing the suspected gunmen. By the time he arrived at the spot, the assailants had taken away Lingamanthu’s bike at gunpoint and were preparing to proceed towards Tirumalagiri to escape from the police when Venkanna took a couple of snaps of the SIMI fugitives.

One of the two gunmen threatened to shoot Venkanna, showing the revolver while holding a carbine weapon in his other hand. Venkanna was standing on one side of the road, while SIMI operatives were on the opposite side, when a bus came in the middle of the road, obstructing the two gunmens’ vision. Meanwhile, as the police were tailing the SIMI operatives and inching closer, they had no option but to flee.

The eyewitness said the SIMI operatives would have at least tried to confiscate the camera at gunpoint.

“The RTC bus and imminent arrival of the police saved me,” the shutterbug said.

Five undertrials of Warangal prison facing terror cases were shot dead by police on the Warangal-Nalgonda district border when they tried to escape while being brought to a court in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Among the killed was Vikaruddin of Hyderabad, who was accused of shooting down two policemen some days ago in city and trying to recruit youth for the terror outfit he had allegedly launched on his own.

A convoy of three vehicles carrying the undertrials left the Warangal Prison at 8.30 a.m. The incident occurred on Hyderabad-Warangal Highway at around 10.25 a.m. As the vehicles were reaching Kandigadda Thanda, Vikaruddin requested police to stop for a while to attend nature’s call.

The five prisoners suddenly lunged at the escort policemen and tried to open fire after snatching a firearm from one of the policemen. Other members of the police party returned fire killing Vikaruddin and four others.

Police officials reach spot of incident

Other prisoners killed were Zakir, Amjad, Hanif and Izhar Khan. Warangal SP A.K. Jha and Range IG B. Malla Reddy rushed to the spot. The Nalgonda SP Vikramjit Duggal along with Hyderabad Range DIG Y.Gangadhar too arrived there. Hyderabad IGP Naveenchand rushed to the place and inquired as to how the encounter took place.

Later in the afternoon, the bodies were shifted to Area Hospital in Jangaon in Warangal District for post-mortem. As the incident took place inside Nalgonda District, a kilometer away from Warangal border, the Nalgonda police and revenue officials arrived at the hospital for inquest. Bhongir RDO Madhusudhan conducted the inquest.

This was the third major terror related incident in Telangana State in the past one week. While a constable and a home guard were shot dead at Suryapet bus-station in Nalgonda a week ago by two suspected SIMI activists, the latter were killed by police in an exchange of fire three days later. Another police constable too was killed in the second encounter.

Viqar Ahmed, Syed Amjad and Mohd. Zakir, who were shot dead by police at Tanguturu village in Nalgonda District on Warangal District border on Tuesday, hail from Hyderabad. The other two, Izhar Khan and Mohd. Haneef, were from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

A Registered Medical Practitioner, Haneef completed B.A.M.S. course. After practicing in Ahmedabad for some time, he shifted to Hyderabad where he came in contact with Viqar Ahmed. Police sources said that ‘doctor Haneef’ gave shelter to Viqar, who started self-styled terror outfit Tahreek-Galba-e-Islam (TGI) and allegedly killed three policemen - one in Gujarat and two in Hyderabad.

Viqar reportedly worked with a religious fundamentalist organisation based out of Old City here for some time before mysteriously disappearing. Police records stated that he, along with his associate Syed Amjad Ali shot dead a constable Vinay Yadav at Maninagar in Ahmedabad in 2007.

In 2008, he fired from close range injuring two policemen of Counter Intelligence when they tried to arrest him at IS Sadan in Santoshnagar, Hyderabad, according to police.

He shot dead a Home Guard and seriously injured a constable by firing at a police picket in Falaknuma in 2009, a day ahead of Mecca masjid terror attack anniversary, said the police.

He was also accused of gunning down a constable at Shahalibanda in 2010, five days ahead of Mecca masjid blast anniversary.
