Nalgonda stringer braves the odds to capture photos of SIMI operatives - The Hindu

Suspected SIMI operatives caught in action by photographer Srirangam Venkanna at Arvapally in Nalgonda district a couple of hours before they were killed.

A reporter-cum-photographer who generally reports on agriculture and development issues in and around Arvapally mandal in Nalgonda district, unexpectedly came across the two armed SIMI activists, and managed to take their pictures. But he did not know at that point of time that he would be the only person to capture pictures of these deadly gunmen since they were killed by the police exactly a couple of hours later at Janakipuram.

Srirangam Venkanna, a stringer for a vernacular news daily Sakshi at Arvapally, has won laurels not only from journalists but also from the citizens and police.

The police had been conducting search operations across the State since the past two days after the Suryapet incident on Thursday. At around 6.30 a.m., news broke of two persons moving close to Arvapally with weapons when Venkanna rushed to the spot without delay. He took out his digital camera from his bag upon seeing the suspected gunmen. By the time he arrived at the spot, the assailants had taken away Lingamanthu’s bike at gunpoint and were preparing to proceed towards Tirumalagiri to escape from the police when Venkanna took a couple of snaps of the SIMI fugitives.

One of the two gunmen threatened to shoot Venkanna, showing the revolver while holding a carbine weapon in his other hand. Venkanna was standing on one side of the road, while SIMI operatives were on the opposite side, when a bus came in the middle of the road, obstructing the two gunmens’ vision. Meanwhile, as the police were tailing the SIMI operatives and inching closer, they had no option but to flee.

The eyewitness said the SIMI operatives would have at least tried to confiscate the camera at gunpoint.

“The RTC bus and imminent arrival of the police saved me,” the shutterbug said.

do we have proof that they are SIMI operatives ? Or just petty criminal gang

Encounter killings: Muslim body demands high-level judicial probe | Siasat

Aligarh, April 09:
All India Majlis-e-Mushawarat, an apex body of different Muslim organisations in the country, has urged the central government to constitute a high-level judicial panel for a time-bound probe into the recent killing of five alleged SIMI activists while in custody in Telangana.

The Majlis president Zafurul Islam in a statement said all independent accounts suggested that the victims were handcuffed when the killing took place.

Khan said senior functionaries of the NDA government were asserting that "Indian Muslims were immune to the designs of International terrorism" while the security forces were "in fact pushing Muslim youths into the hands of the forces of extremism and terrorism".

Khan said it would be tragic for all concerned if Muslim youths are pushed to the brink by such forces. Khan said that the Telangana killings were a chilling reminder of the unpunished "false encounters" which took place in the past such as Hashimpura and Batla house, warned that the situation was fraught with grave consequences.

NHRC notice to Telangana on killing of undertrials - The Hindu
Special Correspondent
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that the Telangana police shot dead five undertrials while they were being taken to Hyderabad in connection with a court case on Tuesday.

The Commission, which is currently holding a camp sitting here, issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police, Telangana, calling for reports within two weeks. It will take up the matter at its camp sitting to be held at Hyderabad on April 23, a NHRC press note said here on Thursday.

According to media reports, the incident took place when the vehicle carrying the undertrials crossed the Warangal district border and reached the outskirts of Tanguturu village in Nalgonda district. One of the undertrials asked the police to halt the vehicle for a toilet break. While getting back to the van, he allegedly snatched an INSAS rifle from a policeman and fired two bullets at a sub-Inspector sitting in the front row, who ducked and escaped. Sensing danger, other constables immediately opened fire resulting in the instant death of five undertrials.

The Commission, the press note said, observed that from the news report, “... it appears that this is an instance of blatant use of disproportionate force resulting in loss of lives of five undertrials who were in judicial custody and gross violation of human rights.”
