Yet our troop fatality rates are much lower then virutally all our neighbours. the list includes Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, afghanistan, pakistan, and Iraq that you mentioned. Perhaps turkmenistan might have us beat. since their biggest threat might be mountain goats. there are many elements to a succesful security strategy.

if you are primarily relying on physical barriers of last resort like mraps. Then you have already failed. The enemy has made the security situation in your country so bad, that your troops need to ride around in armor in their home turf. Iraqs security situation makes MRAPS extremely vital.

Iran actually has a very succesful multi-layered security system that heavily emphasizes on neutralizing a threat before it comes even close to IRan. thats the lesson learned from 8 years of war in Iranian lands. You need to take the war/insecurity away from your borders.
