2.87 million Indians have no faith, census reveals for first time

Atheism is Rational. It is the way forward for humanity.
The way towards peace, progress and a solution for most problems.
Believing blindly in fairy tales and sky daddys is just childish and outright stupid. Spirituality or being culturally religious is ok.

.
The only religion is live and let others live and respect others..By respecting others, you will gain respect too. And if everyone starts respecting others then there will be no problems.

But sometimes in life when someone is feeling low, then religion does help dont know why, but it does help people to regain trust and confidence on themselves.

You know, by posting things like that, people won't take you seriously. It reeks of immaturity.

I am pretty sure it is. I think people just give the religion they were born into when asked if they follow a religion. I am surprised at the 2% figure in Pakistan though.... Isn't it dangerous to identify oneself as an atheist? Unless you belong to a very elite well connected family?

You said they have a heightened sense of self worth and look down on believers?... How is this a threat? Can you blame them for their sense of self worth....Especially when you see the smart things that believers do ...like killing each other because their god is better than their neighbors....forcing women into clothes you think they should wear....imprisoning people because they said something against your religion...need I go on?
You are making the mistake of using reason with a person who does not understand it , dont bother:)

CHENNAI: India has 2.87 million people who have no faith in any religion — 0.24% of the country's population of 1.21 billion — according to the 2011 census, which was the first to include a 'non-faith' category. The figure includes atheists, rationalists as well as those not interested in any religion but believe in some 'unknown' force.

A majority of people (1,643,640) who ticked the non-faith category live in rural areas as compared to those in urban areas (1,223,663). More males (1,463,712) than females (1,403,591) said that they did not believe in any faith.

Uttar Pradesh accounts for the most people registered as 'non-faith' (582,000) than any other state. Bihar, Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu all have more than one lakh people in the category.

TN, perhaps more than any other state, has a history of atheism. It started with E V Ramasamy (1879-1973), popularly known as Periyar, who propagated atheism (or rationalism) in the early 1900s. Since then, the political party he founded, Dravidar Kazhagam, and members of its offshoots, the Dravidian parties like DMK, have had avowed atheists. Over time, though, some of the non-believers found religion and perform yagas that Periyar had fought against tooth and nail.

"It is welcome that our voice has been recorded for the first time in the census," Dravida Kazhagam leader K Veeramani said. But he believes there are many more non-believers than the census department recorded.

"There are two parts to this," he said. "One is that the census department does not have a foolproof system of collecting data. Two, there are some non-believers who don't have the courage to say they don't belong to any religion. If you include them I'm sure the non-faith category would comprise at least 1% of the population."

A 2012 WIN-Gallup poll would appear to corroborate that view: the report, based on interviews with 50,000 people from 57 countries, stated that 3% of Indians were convinced atheists and 3% were unsure or did not respond. It said 81% of Indians were religious and 13% were not religious.

Andhra Pradesh too has had several non-believers. The Atheist Centre based in Vijayawada and its founder Gora (Goparaju Ramachandra Rao) and his wife Saraswathi Gora fought against superstitions both during the freedom movement and after Independence.

2.87 million Indians have no faith, census reveals for first time - The Times of India

A very small number

. .
So whom do Atheists worship?? I every body worships somebody!! Money??

.
among this number in india will be some fake-faithless, in manner similar to christopher hitchens - "faithless" as long as it is against islam and socialism.

these pretentious fakers in india will somehow believe in the most fantastic mythologies the sangh parivar has to offer and will rationalize that in various ways.

pdf also has a small representation from this kind.

Spirituality or being culturally religious is ok.

1. spirituality is mostly absent in the context of india, as india is extremely tilted towards crowded/chaotic way of life bounded by capitalism and reactionary traditionalism.

2. how far can one be allowed to be "culturally religious" before one goes into "fully religious" mode??

3. religion in the original context beliefs need not be the same.

Money is divine, everybody worships it. :D

by "everybody", you mean...

They can still be called Hindus even if they no faith as according to them hinduism embraced all beliefs so why such survey exist when Hinduism co exist with atheism and agnosticism?

1. I agree with

2. Allowed to keep it to himself. Once he starts preaching/forcing things down another's throat/asking for religious exemption = show him the finger and tell him to sod off..

3. I don't get.

i say this with from a removed and historical point of view... what i meant was that the foundational teachings of prophet jesus, prophet muhammad, buddha and guru nanak were meant at various levels to simplify life... these foundational teachings differed from those of other religions which tended towards building extreme mysticism ( extremes of divine worship ) and building social divisions.

however, this was the past and current... in the immediate future, all prior religions should be abolished ( at least public demonstration of them ) because they neither have helped in the current scene nor do they fit reasonably in a near-future scientific human society.

Hinduism is not proper religion , its union of varios school of thought which flourished in India & consodilated after coming of Abrahamic religions in India.
A Vaishnav sect is 180 degree opposite compared to Shaiv sect.
Before Buddha there are a priest called Charuvak who preached atheism.
Very little of his writing currently available due to destroyed by religious priests .
Some of their verses are fantastic but some cause mayhem in the world if followed.
So, its technically correct that you can be Athiest & Hindu.
I myself never goes temple or do religious ritual until my Mom points a gun on my head.

Even a 1400 year old Islam are hijacked by Mullahs so does others.
Hinduism is one of the oldest religion who teach never kill a animal (even a green tree) for food then how can it propagate inhuman caste system ?
Simple, due to its hijacked by priests as in older times teachers are called brahman, ruling & fighters are called Kshatriya, business class called Vaishya & service class called Shudra.
Now if someone Brahman son become serviceman then they called Shudra.
Teachers, thinkers & ruling class are always respected so they wanted to make it permanent so here comes fake 'Manusmriti' in the picture.
Idol worship is borrowed from Buddhism before its only Yagya were done as religious ritual.

So, main problem is not caste system as it would be demolished if we eliminate priest system.
