112 dies in Garments factory fire

Most of the garments owners are illeterate and first generation rich. They care less for the safety and think the luck will be always with them.

Nothing will happen. They will say, its all Allah's wish. and move on.

In the Pakistan fire, the rich owners had paid off government inspectors to call off inspections. If that is the case in Bangladesh, the owners need to be held accountable financially and criminally.

That's the only way to prevent repeat tragedies.

The govt itself should have no bulls*** approach...difference between Asia and West.

RIP.

Politicians will be useless. The media must keep the focus on the investigation to make sure the owners/operators are held responsible.

well, most of the garments factory have necessary fire fighting system! Last night, the factory had alternative evacuation pathways but the workers were not trained to use those, some panicked and jumped from the building!

Over 100 were also injured from the fire which broke out at the Tazreen Fashions Limited of Toba Group at around 7:30pm on Saturday. Ten units of fire service managed to douse the fire around 11:45pm.

Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dhaka range) Mijanur Rahman on Sunday morning told bdnews24.com: "We have found 112 dead bodies until now. The bodies are being taken to the Nischintapur Government Primary School ground."

Fire Brigade Director (Operation) Maj Mahbub told bdnews24.com the rescue operation inside the blazed building was still undergoing.

An emotionally charged environment has descended in the area as families of those who died or injured gathered there.

Meanwhile, police authorities have announced formation of an investigation committee to look into the reasons behind the fire which is one of the biggest in the history of Bangladesh.

Superintendent of Police of Dhaka district Habibur Rahman told reporters ADIG Mijanur Rahman would lead the three-member committee. The Ministry of Home Affairs would also form another probe team on the matter, he added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have expressed shock and mourned the deaths from the fire.

Ashulia Industrial Police's Inspector Mokhlesur Rahman said dead bodies would be handed over to the families after identified by relatives.

The district administration has announced to provide Tk 20,000 to the families of the deceased as funeral costs.

Rescue workers in the wee hours on Sunday had confirmed of recovering at least nine dead bodies, including seven of female workers. They had jumped off the nine-storey building to save themselves from the fire.

Bangladesh Army's Ninth Infantry Division has also arrived at the scene in the morning along with the members of Red Crescent. Police, RAB and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel have cordoned off the factory area while the rescue operation was still underway.

People looking for their relatives who are trapped inside the factory, however, had started hurling brickbats to police in the morning alleging delay in the rescue operation.

Industrial Police's Deputy Director Moktar Hossain told bdnews24.com the situation came under control as they charged baton and fired several rounds of teargas shells.

Fire Brigade Director General Brig Gen Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah said, "We are suspecting that the fire originated from electrical short-circuit. We can say it for sure after investigation."

Fate sealed as gate was 'locked'

Fate sealed as gate was 'locked' | Bangladesh | bdnews24.com

Savar, Nov 25 (bdnews24.com)—The fire alarm was there and it went off rightly.

But authorities of Tazreen Fashions Ltd stopped its workers running to safety saying the alarm had gone out of order, locked the factory gate from outside and asked them to return to work.

Workers who escaped the blaze by jumping from windows they had broken shared how their colleagues were pushed towards death after the fire raged through their factory on Saturday evening.

At least 110 workers were killed in the worst factory fire in the history of Bangladesh as rescuers wrapped up the operation on Sunday afternoon.

Mohammad Ripu, who was working on the second floor of the nine-storied building, was one of those fortunate enough to survive by jumping from a window.

Nine of his co-workers died trying to escape through the way Ripu had tried. Ripu, however, was injured.

"The fire alarm went off during the incident (when the fire broke out). At that time we tried to go downstairs fearing a fire has broken out but the authorities said nothing had happened. The alarm was out of order (said the authorities)," said Ripu.

"They locked the collapsible gate from outside and asked workers to go back to work saying the alarm was being fixed."

Soon the fire, which started on the ground floor, spread to upper floors, forcing the panic-stricken workers to jump from the upper floors for their lives.

"We went to the sample room as the temperature rose with the spread of fire and jumped."

'Nazmul' was another who found the factory entrance locked from outside and had to jump from the second floor.

Md Swapan, another worker, alleged 'Kamrul' an orderly of one of the factory directors was the man who locked the gate from outside.
The female workers were the most unlucky when they decided to jump for her dear life. Nine of them died, the most among men and women workers combined. Mili Akter was one of them, who fell onto the rooftop of an adjacent teen-roofed house.

She cried inconsolably as she remembered her getaway and showed the bruises and cuts she had suffered during the ordeal.

She made the same allegation: "Authorities did not allow us to escape though the fire alarm went off. The entrance was locked (from outside) claimed that the alarm was not working properly," said Akter.
The allegation is not the first of its kind. In 2006, similar charges were made when a fatal fire swept through at KTS Textiles and Garments in Chittagong.

At least 54 people, 12 of who were under the age of 14, were burned alive in that fire that broke out on Feb 23.

The only means of escape was through the windows--either by jumping or by climbing down ropes made of cloth. Many survived this way though others suffered serious injuries in the process. Some were impaled on the steel rods sticking up in under-construction buildings around the factory.

Of the dead, forty bodies were found just inside this second set of gates of KTS--they had been burnt, crushed or suffocated.

Regarding this particular allegation of Tazreen workers, Industrial Police's Deputy Director Mukter Hossain said, "We also heard this. Nothing can be said until the investigation is complete."

Three committees were formed to look into the incident.

BBC quoting a firefighter reported there was no fire exit at Tazreen Fashions.

Evidence such as the factory's correspondence with importers also suggest the factory was not compliant and Wal-Mart ranked it as 'Orange' in its evaluation, which means highly risky.

Somebody needs to be held responsible. An example should be made of the person in charge of safety.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

SANGSAD BHABAN, Nov 26 (BSS) - Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the incidents of fire in garment industries are being staged in a planned way to destroy the country's garment sector.

"It is being understood from the incidents that who commit such crimes with which intention. Once attacks were made on police, now the garment factories are being burnt," she said while participating in the obituary reference on the deaths of garment workers in Ashulia garment fire and 13 people in Chittagong overpass guarder collapse on Saturday.

In this connection, the Prime Minister referred to the arrest of two persons- Sumi Begum and Zakir Hossain---who were held for trying to set fire to Bebunia Garment Factory which was caught in the CCTV of the factory.

Sumi Begum has confessed that she committed such a crime in exchange for only Taka 20,000 and Zakir Hossain helped her to commit the crime," the PM said adding she herself saw the video footage of the incident

She said the garment factory is the medium for earning bread and butter of the women. So why they are engaged in such destructive activities for a few amount of money. Those who remain behind the scene should be tracked down, Sheikh Hasina said.

She listed various government steps for the development of women workers engaged in the garment industry.

The Prime Minister also urged the countrymen including labour leaders to refrain from provocative activities after accidents in garment or other industries. "Provide help to the victims after any accident instead of resotring to provocative activities," she said, adding those fanning the provocative activities should be identified.

Terming the Ashulia fire incident as horrific and regrettable, she said Fire Brigade personnel were rushed to the scene immediately after the incident. Later, BGB, Army and RAB worked jointly to douse the flame and rescue the victims.

"It is a very regrettable incident that a huge number of workers were charred in the fire, and I don't know when this game with life will be stopped," she said.

The Prime Minister said 109 bodies were recovered after the fire in Tazrin Garment in Ashulia and of them 60 persons were identified. The rest of the victims would be identified through DNA test and they would be buried tomorrow, she said.

"After the accident, I round-the-clock inquired about the situation and monitored the rescue operation. We have made arrangement for burial of the killed and treatment for the injured," she said.

Sheikh Hasina said she also sent the senior leaders of her party to the scene to participate in the rescue operation.

The Leader of the House said the government has given Taka 20,000 to each of the family of the killed workers, while the Labour Ministry announced allocation of Taka one crore for the fire victims. Assistance would be also provided from the Prime Minister's Welfare Fund, she said.

Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the victims and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved families.

Taking the floor, Tofail Ahmed termed the fire incident in Ashulia garment factory a pre-planned incident.

He demanded a full-fledged investigation to unearth the mystery behind the fire incident that happened at a time when Bangladesh's garment industry is going to take position of becoming the world's number one sector and when the trials of war criminals are on.

"There is the politics behind the incident and I think conspiracy is being hatched to destabilize the country," he added.

A B M Ruhul Amin Howlader demanded to form a judicial inquiry committee to avert such incidents in future. He also urged the government to provide more compensation to the victim families.

Initiating the discussion, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon said fires in garment factories have become a regular phenomenon as maintaining compliance is being ignored for long in the country's highest export earning sector.

He said such incidents are recurring one after another as governments could not take legal actions against the garment owners due to their failure to maintain compliance in the factories.

He urged the government to provide adequate treatment to the injured of the two incidents and more compensation to the victims' families.
