NEW DELHI: In the aftermath of the Pathankot terror attack, Indian Air Force plans to raise 10 additional squadrons of Garud commandos, consisting of about 1,000 personnel, to protect its 950 flying and non-flying establishments across the country.

The Force also plans to expedite its planned fortification of 54 main flying bases across the country with better sensors and electrical fencing.

The decisions were taken after the IAF completed security audit of its establishment in the aftermath of the Pathankot terror attack.

Defence sources said the IAF which has about 1,080 Garud commandos at present, will seek permission to raise 10 more squadrons.

When the Garud force was first formed in 2003, the plan was to have about 2,000 personnel.

The sources also said the setting up of electric fences with better sensors will be speeded up.

Electric fences have already been set up at bases in northern areas and as per the plan earlier, Pathankot air base would have been the first in the western sector to get it, sources said.

Top sources in the IAF had said the audit, ordered after the Pathankot airbase attack last month, has identified chinks in the security and measures would be taken to plug them.

Asked if Defence Security Corps, made up of retired soldiers, would be replaced with other security personnel, the sources said Garud commandos are already present at its facilities and, if needed, more will be added. Source- economictimes.

+ it should be noted that the IAF had proposed the addtional manpower for the Garuds years ago but it has been pending since then- typical Indian decsion making, always reactive.

Hopefully the IAF/MoD also ensures that all SFs get top-notch equipment and for the love of God greenlight the SOCOM!

UPA wad curse to nation all project for army for which tender was passed before 2004 are coming on ground after 2014, Rafale(2004), Kalvari-class, Project 75I-class submarine, Arihant class, Akula class was started in NDA govt & getting completed in NDA rule after 10 years while no project announced in UPA.
Even when the Garud force was first formed in 2003, the plan was to have about 2,000 personnel, so UPA stopped them to on that postion.
When India was not a big economic power with sanction NDA added much power to armed forces like Talwar-class frigate, Su-30s, Mig-29s, INS Vikramaditya, A&NC & much more.

Thank u Pakistan for waking up our lathergic security setup and spanking our lazy political establishments, when ever Pakistan does some mischief something good has happened to our armed forces for ex: after 26/11 our under powered coast guard and coastal police stations were ill equipped and neglected see after your misdeeds there is raining new boats and ships on coast guards and new police stations and radars have been established, I don't think without Pakistan's aggressive mentality our army is today a powerfull forces given our non violence policy of Gandhi who even advised to disband the army.
Once again thank u Pakistan for keeping our forces updated and alert and also giving realtime experience.

They plan to raise only 1000 more to protect more than 950 bases. You need to lot more Garuds only to protect your Air Bases and also need to train engineers and other staff guys with Assault Rifles 3 to 4 weeks Anti Terror Training

The primary mission of Garuds is NOT air base/force protection. They are the Special Operations force of the IAF and are trained/tasked with CSAR, FAC etc etc. They are deployed at only the most sensitive and at risk air bases- not all 950, and at most there would be 3 teams deployed (about 30 operators). All IAF bases are protected by IAF police and DSC, the Garuds simply suppliment this protection in some strategic bases and act as QRTs.

Welcome steps but of course, this being India, it only happens AFTER the event.
