10,000MW expected in national grid by Dec 2017

will you care to explain that this plant is not built in Jamshoro, sukkur or even in nawabshah to minimize cost/production ratio and why only sahiwal? and by saying it a disaster doesn't mean plant itself is a disaster. i was referring to numerous other parameters that should be considered.

this project was also offered in 80's and was denied due to it's environmental implications

Still, 2-3 trains are required on daily basis for it to run smoothly as Thar coal lies in tier 3 (quality wise). low quality = more coal.

There are 3400 megawatts under construction in thar.....

There are other factors considered while selecting a location of power plants and every factor has its own merit and de merit....

Why sahiwal?? Answere is why not???

People objecting need to find a valid objection ....or SFU....

Apart from Sahiwal many other Coal power Plants are under Construction Including Thar :D :D

Thar power Plant
under construction, currently 1 MW is being produced by underground coal gasification process, generation will be enhanced to 100 MW by the end of 2016

Lakhra Coal Power Plant Completed
Power station of 150 MW (3x50 MW) installed capacity at Khanot/Jamshoro is the only coal-fired power plant in the country

Siddique Sons Energy Limited
Super-critical Coal-based Private Power Project, PPIB has issued a letter of support, estimated to cost $600 million and financial close is expected by first quarter of 2016

Jamshoro Coal power Project
Under construction, a $1.5 billion joint venture of ADB IDB GOP

Thar's coal fields: mining for power

MITHI: Mining in Thar's 9,600 kilometre coal fields are gaining momentum after the arrival of experts from China.

After the arrival of China under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), work on two blocks and particularly on Block II has picked up pace.

Farhan Ahmed Ansari from Engro told Dawn.com that the arrival of Chinese engineers and technical staff has accelerated the pace of work on Block II. "More and more experts are arriving every day," he added.

Almost 3,000 technicians and engineers are expected to arrive on site to help locals in running the heavy machinery and developing open-pit mining.

Ansari said that over 80 per cent of landowners have been monetarily compensated for the lands aquired by Engro and the Thar Coal Authority.

The project's first phase involves the relocation of villagers from Sahri Dars and Tharyo Halepoto in Islamkot taluka. In order to evacuate the site chosen for open pit mining completely, villagers will we rehabilitated to nearby locations. Ansari claimed they will be provided with modern facilities, and given housing and employment.

Meanwhile, high school students are being trained in operational areas so they can be gainfully employed in the mega-project later.

The villagers of Sahri Dars and Tharyo Halepoto said they would resist if the commitments and promises made to them were not fulfilled. About 4,000 people are set to be relocated after their model houses are built.

An official from Thar Coal Mining Authority said that all preparations have been made for the inauguration of the country's mega-project, which comprises of 12 blocks on over 9,000 square km of Tharparkar district. Buried under this land lies an estimated 175 billion tones of coal.

Partab Shivani, a local activist in Mithi, hopes that the mega project brings prosperity to the backward region. He urges concerned authorities to keep their promises and feels that steps should be taken to ensure the environment, ecology, demography of the area.

Thar coal may be useful, but only at the site. The quality is poor and therefore the economics of transporting it are adverse.

The mega project will affect life in the area by burning 16,667 tonne coal daily and throwing ashes and smoke into the air. However, the report of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) conducted by the National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak) to assess the impacts of a 1,360MW coal power plant project on fertile agriculture land has not been made public. It is the responsibility of the Punjab Energy Department to share environmental impacts of the project. Quote dawn. google it.

I've worked on an condensate & lpg plant burning about .25mm of gas and 30bbl of per day and it had huge enviormental implications within a year.

There are far more toxic factories than a coal power plant daily spewing their venomous chemicals in all over country...

Coal power plant is nothing as compared to what is already being pumped into air and water....

Fight for legistlation if u are concerned, rather than against a particular project

Adding more capacity that a failing national power grid cannot handle is a losing game. Where is the investment in the grid itself?

Agreed, people in the sub-continent think that investing in Power generation alone will fix the power woes.If you don't in grid infra most of the power will get wasted

Wasted? Yes. It is the theft by all and sundry that is the bigger problem. And the big and powerful entities who do not pay their bills for what they consume.

Upto 1 billion USD is going into upgrading grids....

General knowledge....repeatedly reported by media....

The question every one need to ask, and no body is asking is .... why chinese investing so heavily in power generation in pakistan??

Profits?? For a 13 trillion USD economy... long term profits in a 35 billion USD investment in one of the most volatile countries in the world....i am sure chinese know thousand better ways to make money......

Will it turn black someday to show the presence of Coal? or this landscape will remain like this?

.
Gov is gonna Import Coal For the Power Plants in Punjab and Balochistan that includes Hub Coal power plant and others

Also, after the first phase projects, the second phase Coal power plants will have serious equipment in them to reduce the carbon footprint and will "sanitize" the Coal before burning. That way, the lower quality Coal will be "treated" and will produce less toxins and Carbon footprint.

The purpose is to use Pakistan's own coal as its in abundance. But due to the lower grade, you need treatment first so to complete projects on time (for phase I), they are importing the Coal for now.

Can't you read?? it's 9600 Square Kilometers.... Pakistan total area is 196,096 square Kilometers :D :D Learn the difference between Kilometers and Square kilometers :D :D and then troll

Will it turn black someday to show the presence of Coal? or this landscape will remain like this?

Yaaar Please don't talk shit here you don't make sense

in the pic you can see the landscape of Coal power plant and the landscape... the Black area is the Coal deposit area where the coal is stored for use while other area remains as it it so go troll somewhere else

and if you are talking about That Landscape it gonna be look like this

Still, 2-3 trains are required on daily basis for it to run smoothly as Thar coal lies in tier 3 (quality wise). low quality = more coal.

Economics dictate that plants are built either near the supply point e.g. Karachi, Port Qasim, Thar ( mine head) to save the transportation cost; or near the demand centre that is the place where it is needed most, to save on transmission losses and cost. Unless one sees the economic evaluation/ cash flow analysis, it is difficult to determine whether it was better to have plant located in lower Sind or near where the power is going to be consumed (Sahiwal).

With so many new power plants coming up in Karachi, it is also possible that existing national grid does not have additional load carrying capacity which necessitates that power plants are established near consumption centres.
Besides, Karachi air is already polluted and there are more coal based power plants under construction on the Karachi coast. Therefore in my view, it better for the environment to have new coal burning plants far away from Karachi.

Additionally, I understand that most new power plants are based on imported coal and not on the Thar coal; hence Jamshoro would not have been a suitable site any way. This should help Pakistan Railway's profitability as carriage of imported coal from Karachi/Port Qasim to Sahiwal would generate substantial revenue.
