10,000MW expected in national grid by Dec 2017

Well N effort in combatting electricity loadshedding has been commendable as I have personally witnessed this change. However I always held that the electricity crisis will take years to resolve especially with everyday demand for electricity increases and increases. I don't believe these dates from any politicians bcz the foolish nation always looks and need some sort of magic wand solution. However what I do like to see is the effort being placed into combatting a situation...

Anyway good job and keep it up.

One line should be made pakistans national motto and shud b hammered into every soul that breathes and is born in this country.... and things will improve dramatically....

Line is " there is no free lunch"

So stop expecting one"

Sir

What's your opinion on this timeline? Considering what the progress has been in the past 2.5 years, i sincerely doubt it if the Government can achieve this milestone by December 2017. These projects take lots of time, i reckon they need at-least 5 years to add 5000 MW let alone 10 000 MW.

Problem is funding. Even the private Pak investors have to look for foreign investors. For example project that I refer to costs about $90 - million. Understand that equity of about $25-million has been arranged. Until such time the balance $70- million that has to come from as loans from foreign banks or Investment Funds is in place, nothing will happen.

Chinese were cash rich, hence investing in Pakistan, now that Chinese economy has slowed down, it could affect investment in the CPEC?

10,000 MW even at $1-million per MW requires $10-billion investment. I have to see to believe that NS Gov’t can deliver on her promise..

Plz do use your head before making stupid comments.

I am not talking about cost of money..... but the cost less damage that coal power plant is going to deliver to clean environment, water bodies and fertile soul of Sahiwal......

Hon Mrc,

You had hit the nail on the head. We want electricity but don’t want to pay for it. We don’t like paying income tax; use all kinds of scams to amass money without the slightest thought of whether it is right or wrong. Even Mosques are built on illegally grabbed land and we think nothing of ‘China cutting’ grave yards!

We are obsessed with two things only, getting rich and getting to heaven even if we have to kill score of innocents in the process.

I sold some shares recently and a fair bit of Zakat was deducted from account at the end of December. My sister tells me that we have many Shia in our family and we are not prejudiced, why don’t you declare you are a Shia and save Zakat deduction? My answer was that Allah has declared hundreds of times “Aqeemus salatah wa atuz zakata” (establish prayers and pay Zakat). I may be a bad Muslim but even if I covert to Shia Islam, I am not going to ignore Allah’s decree to avoid paying Zakat tax which Pakistani poor need badly.

This example is not meant to criticize Shias, only to illustrate how many of my countrymen behave when it comes to paying taxes!

There are indeed no ‘free lunches’. Ask the Tibetans how Chinese treat you if & when their interests clash with yours.

Coal is a viable and safe option..we have one of largest coal reserve in thar that has not been utilized for decades ..but it pollutes more...

Nuclear is cheap and guarenteed...but onitial investment is high and cost of an accident even higher....

Hydal is safe .... but requires huge investment....and completion time is between 10 to 15 years for a single large project....

Gas and hydrocarbons are cheap ... but only of u have domestic production...like in middle east.... other wise they are practucally un affordable.....

No body in world rellies on a single source....as every source has good and bad things attached to them...

And coal is probably most widely used source for electricity generation in the world

Like i said in life .....there are no free lunches

Where,?
In Sindh.......

What is point of transporting coal to mid of Punjab to feed the power plant?

Why not open all Coal power plants at places near to their extraction source? In desert or semi hilly terrain where there is no fertility, water body or population.....?

Indeed there is no such thing as free lunches..... but you do have choice between cheap healthy lunch and expensive poisonous lunch......

That's exactly what i thought, the problem is far to big that it can be solved within 5 years.

Thanks for your response

You're forgetting a major factor in ending load shedding, and that is the end of line losses and power theft. There are districts in this country where power theft is at a rate of 90%. Unless brute force is used to end this, i don't see Pakistan overcoming load shedding issues not for at-least the next decade. As our colleague said above, we Pakistanis want electricity but don't want to pay for it.

so why every other country is building Coal power Plants?

Paying 5 times more then a lunch cost is called "ch***yapa*

http://www.thenews.com.pk/print/61782-the-nandipur-scandal

That's exactly what happens when your Power Plant Part lies on Port for a very long time the cost will go higher and higher every single day

transportation charges will increase cost/production ratio further more environmental damage it will cause in a longer run will outclass it's benefits.

for every MW you need atleast a ton of coal. and that's a huge quantity given that you'll adjust the quality of coal. a 3 ton of average quality coal will generate roughly 1MW (not including other processing parameters) so in order to produce 1200MW you'll require atleast 200 hundreds trucks daily! and those too will be coming from sindh.

oh and in 2015 UN climate summit, Modi agreed to drop CO2 emission (chiefly from coal plants) provided g7 shares safe and green nuclear generation tech.

LOL why would you Transport Coal by trucks when Trains can do it in low cost and can do the job of 200 Trucks at the same time.... That's why GOv Ordered Hooper wagons for the transportation of coal and 55 Locomotives from US just for freight operations

This is how you transport coal by train not by Trucks :D

Pakistan Railways orders 800 wagons from CRRC

Jan 14th 2016,

PAKISTAN Railways (PR) has awarded CRRC Corporation subsidiary Jinan Railway Vehicles Equipment Company (JRVEC) a Rs 3.92bn ($US 37.5m) contract to supply 800 hopper wagons.

Under the contract, which was signed by representatives of PR and CRRC at a ceremony at the Ministry of Railways in Islamabad the first 205 wagons will be manufactured by JRVEC in China, while the remaining 595 units will be assembled at PR's Mughalpura Locomotive Works in Lahore.

Deliveries will start later this year and the 100km/h wagons will be used on coal traffic to power stations in Karachi and Qadirabad.

Railways minister Mr Khawaja Saad Rafique says a tender for a further 585 hopper wagons will be issued soon.
