KIRKUK: More than 1,000 Kurdish career soldiers in the Iraqi army have deserted and want to be integrated into the Kurdish former rebel peshmerga militia.

The move comes after the Kurdish troops disobeyed orders to take part in an operation ordered by the Shiite-led government in Baghdad against a mainly Sunni Arab town.

If their request is fulfilled, such a mass defection would deal a heavy blow to Iraq’s stretched armed forces as they grapple with a surge in violence that has sparked fears of renewed sectarian bloodshed.

Two officials said the 1,070 Kurdish members of the Iraqi army’s 16th Brigade mutinied when gunmen took control of a northern town in April, and subsequently declined to attend disciplinary re-training.

The soldiers were no longer receiving salaries or rations from the Iraqi army, nor were they following any orders from federal forces, according to the mayor of the town where they are based and the spokesman for the peshmerga ministry.

They ran away from their posts in fear of clashing with the terrorist groups, when the IA came back and cleared the area, they tried to come back, however the IA officers refused to allow them back and gave them a dishonorable discharge. I really wish all Kurds leave the Iraqi army, we don't want foreigners in the IA.

No one stops KRG from letting Iraq go, infact they cannot

KRG is landlocked between enemies
KRG economy depends on Baghdad GDP share and exporting oil through Turkey.

If they declare independence they lose the GDP share, they will have to retreat from the disputed areas they cannot win a war against the south.
They will become 100% dependent on Turkey, economically and militarily for defence, even today they pay oil companies much more just for defence against Iraq.

Like barzani said, "If ExxonMobil came, it would be equal to 10 American military divisions," he said adding that "they will defend the area if their interests are there."

kurds should have their own free country, I get extra kebab everytime I say this ..

Most Iraqis support an independant Kurdish state, but the Kurds are sticking to Iraq in order to get as much oil ca$h as they can before separating. They also want to take over Iraqi oil rich lands to include them in Kurdistan before splitting.

I really wish for Kurds to get a independant saw, just not at the expense of Iraq.

I don't see why people often try to segregate the Kurds from anyone else, treating them like subhumans.

Shame.
