Might seem unreasonable that Libya has higher HDI than china but thats probably because you live in urban costal china which has pretty high HDI (comparable to developed countries in a sense). 2010 data so a bit outdated but you get the point. What drags China down is the incredibly poor...

Japan inches closer to major power status

I highly doubt Japan is planing a supercarrier. A 13 billion dollar carrier is useless without an airwing, so if you add in all the air crafts an equipment, it will cost a conservative estimate of 30 billion dollars. Also it will be too vulnerable to air and missile targets without at least 1...

Japan inches closer to major power status

I sense too much trolling on this thread. Anyway, Japan is already a major power - It has the 3rd largest economy in the world. It doesn't need a carrier battle group (1 USN CBG cost more than all of Japan's destroyer combined) to be a major power.

Nimitz has catapult system so it can launch fighter jets. Izumo can only carry helicopters because it doesn't have the same sophisticated system. It will need a major redesign if it wants to be an aircarft carrier rather than a helicopter carrier. Nonetheless, japan does not need an aircraft...

Japan inches closer to major power status

France and UK have more political influence due to UNSC and former colonies as well as one of the top 3 leaders of EU. Economically, they are smaller than Japan. Who is more powerful? Doesn't really matter, people can argue all day on this, they are powerful asymmetrically.

China is ranked 37 in gender inequality index, very impressive for a developing country (Mao once said women carries half the sky). India is ranked 127, an embarrassment for a country of India's stature. If India wants to see a higher HDI, India needs to treat women better. More educated women...

I hope that will happen as well. It is unfortunate when so many people in India has to live in low HDI settings. If India can make that leap into the upper end of medium HDI, then it is good news for mankind.

India also made some improvements from rank 136 to rank 135. Unfortunately, India is behind her "BRIC" partners, as Brazil, Russia and China are in the High HDI, while India still sits in the lower end of the Medium HDI. I think by 2030, all the BRICS will be in high HDI, and India will be...

The Great Game Changer: Belt and Road Intiative (BRI; OBOR)

Russia and China are both powerful countries, probably the most powerful after USA. They don't need each other as allies and don't want each other as allies. China does not want to get involved with Russia vs EU on Ukraine, and Russia does not want to get involved with China and ASEAN on SCS...

The diplomatic battle between China and Japan is taking a Latin American road trip

good for South America then. Not everything have to be zero sum. Japan (or China) working closer with Latin America will benefit Latin America's economy, which in turn will be a market for China (or Japan).

Commonwealth Games Scottie dogs 'disrespectful to Muslims'

I know that Muslims don't want to be offended, but won't being offended at dogs also offend people that like dogs. Seriously, dogs has been with humans for over 15,000 years. Without them, our ancestors wouldn't have been able to hunt so well and it would have slowed down human development by...

China's navy no longer so inferior to Japan's, experts say

I don't disagree with you but Tsushima is bad example. Russia had 28 ships vs japan 89. Also japanese ships were more modern modern because they just bought it from UK within last 10 years. Also russia had to travel half way around the world so ships were rusty and troops were tired. Japan had...
