ISLAMABAD: In a positive development, the Ministry of Water and Power has announced that all industrial sectors will be exempt from electricity loadshedding till December 2015. It says that this will not only help boost economy, but also exports.

In the last several years, energy shortage had been a ‘dominant constraint’ to economic growth and it was the reason the economy grew by less than four percent.

To this effect, all electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have confirmed to the Ministry of Water and Power that the decision of zero loadshedding for all industries throughout the country was being implemented.

The decision will help increase exports of the country, particularly the export products of the textile sector. The uninterrupted supply of electricity will also help the export-oriented industrial sector to leverage the GSP Plus facility, a senior official of the Ministry of Water and Power told The News on Wednesday.

In 2015, the power sector has been able to utilise 90 percent of its available generation capacity and reaching to record 16,890 MW electricity generation. Domestic loadshedding has been reduced from 8-11 hours to 6-8 hours and bringing industrial loadshedding from 8-12 hours to zero.

Cost minimisation and improvement in cash flow has been ensured by implementing the merit order dispatch i.e. using economical plants first, introducing uniform load management, and differentiated load management by identifying higher theft areas and bringing all DISCOs collection to CPPA.

Every year, the energy crisis in Pakistan took away around 2 percent of the economy. “We have estimated that Pakistan is losing 2 percent of GDP every year due to energy crisis,” official said.

Interestingly, there exists high correlation between growth rate of GDP and that of energy consumption. Historically, during the periods of high growth rate of energy consumption was followed by high growth rate of GDP, conversely periods of lower growth in energy consumption caused lower growth in the GDP.

. . .
Govt doesn't utilize some of the plants because it costs far more than what consumers pay.

Perhaps they can charge extra over some capacity given to industries to make up for the cost of expensive plants.

For example over 400 units (again an example) charge 100% more. Then industries can decide whether that 100% on additional units is enough to cover costs of production.

1.6gw is really good. Hope we can get 2gw by 2018 without running expensive plants.

civilians will have more loadshedding or the miracle that ministers will suffer too?

PML-N should follow the PTI way and make sure no one gets electricity, civilian or industry. equality!

. . . .
As though you don't know how electricity is generated, and how long does it take to get someone to invest, plan, buy and setup machinery, hire and train people, trial run and then go full steam.

Till December? I thought load shedding was gone within six months of the current government???

.
Pml N build the metro bus track in Rawalpindi and i thought i t was impossible because of the heavy traffic of Pindi.Since they did that i expect anything from them

I'm in favor of decision that we can afford domestic loads herding but can't afford industrial one. So better give those industries chance to progress...

So exactly how would this miraculous achievement be implemented?

The business hours will be reduced, like it is in other countries. In the US, majority of the shops close by 9 PM and some earlier. Same rules will be applicable. And the might have a project or two partially going online which will help too. Some load will be sent over to people of course.

No one has a magic wand to fix 70 years of eff-up in 3. People who are going to take your frustration out on this government, should also cuss and verbally abuse the Presi-Gen's who ran Pakistan like their own Tank or Canon and didn't do jack for the people.

But, early - mid 2018, this issue would have become a part of the dark past that no one would want to discuss. Just wait and let the system do what no one's able to do WITHOUT a system for the past 70 years!!

It wasn't six months. It was 2 weeks. You misquoted them. But too bad, now you can cry till 2018 and as they've ACTUALLY announced, this issue would be history (or 90% of it). Still not bad. Fixing such a massive eff-up for the past 70 years in 5 years, I am impressed!! The system should continue to work and deliver to people.

Sadly even if some how this miracle happens and I do wish for it, it won't solve the problem.

The issue is not only on the supply side - as we have come to know well.

In India despite their being sufficient electricity in many cases the regional grids don't buy power from the central one due to massive indebtedness which is caused by non payment of electricity dues, corruption, transmission losses among many many other things. As a result even state capitals like Ranchi face power cuts ranging for 6 - 8 hours a day. I would leave the situation of villages and tier 3 towns to your imagination.

Pakistan should also plan on ensuring that that increased supply doesn't become a millstone around their neck as if not profitable the public services atleast has to remain solvent to ensure proper delivery.

Regards

your Power minister says that they are producing 16800MW, this is a 15% jump over last year

not sure whether this amounts to using 90% of installed capacity, since many posters here claim your installed capacity to be 24000 MW, while at the time of Zardari, it was 21000 MW
at most it looks like 70-80% utilization of installed capacity,
which is still a big improvement over the 55% which happened during PPP era,
and is close to Indian utilization of 85%

so I must say, Noonies are doing a decent job

Exactly. No one seems to be talking about the real issue here. Generation capacity has been higher than demand since this drama began. Problems arise due to high cost, non-payment of dues and extreme mismanagement. But no one wants to talk about these things. Instead public has been sucking on lollipops of newer and more expensive projects.
