Zardari’s bizarre gift to Cameron ridiculed
London, July 3, (PTI):

A painting presented by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to Prime Minister David Cameron during his visit here last week has been termed ‘bizarre’, with a leading British tabloid recommending that it be hung in a toilet in 10, Downing Street.

The painting is based on a widely-published photograph of Cameron, his wife Samantha and daughter Florence, when she was born on August 10 last year.

Aides of Zardari were snapped carrying the painting into 10, Downing Street, when Zardari visited the prime minister’s office-cum-residence last week.

Calling the painting ‘bizarre’ and an example of ‘tacky offerings’ made by world leaders, the Daily Mail on Sunday said: “But Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari does not appear to have understood quite how the etiquette works.”

It added: “Critics claim something similar could be knocked out with the help of a computer within a day. Zardari is in London on a two day visit to discuss enhancing UK-Pakistan partnership in trade and investment.”

The report began by stating that “one can only imagine David Cameron’s reaction when he saw the gift... one for the downstairs loo perhaps”.

While some readers agreed with the tabloid’s recommendation that the painting be placed in the toilet, others complimented the quality of the painting.

Artwork and aid

Some readers chose to link the painting to the foreign aid that Britain gives to Pakistan.
JB wrote: “It’s got to be worth 480 million pounds; that’s what Dave gave to Pakistan”, while Pete added: “Basically what we’re getting in return for millions in foreign aid. Great deal!”

Gotta laugh at these Britons - They really act innocent - The aid given to Pakistan and India (as they criticize it too) is peanuts compared to what they looted from Subcontinent and the impact of it in terms of human life.It was just a courtesy gift and i am glad Zardari did not present some expensive gift after all Pakistan is not a developed country.

UK is good at black humour and this is nothing but the same.

What is wrong with the picture ? Maybe the people who are making fun hang their family pics in the loo

I for one do not think that it is that bad. For a dad, a photograph such as this can be close to heart. Its value should not be estimated against the funds UK has paid Pak.

Its UK not sub continent, they don't see emotion.Gift value make it valuable then emotion attach to it.If this is gifted to some Asian or Arab country this gift would have been respected but to UK, they have been thrown this to dustbin..

servant - master relationship, thats what zardari is trying to present.

By convention in most countries gifts received by Heads of state in their official capacity are not taken home but form part of the state collection.

This pic being personal could put the recipient in a dilemma , in any case there are other subjects one could give pictures on , why personal ones ? Maybe the PM or his wife did not like their hair do or something in the pic hence wasn't among their favorite pics .

The Brits on the other hand ought to realize that scoffing on a gift is bad manners.
