RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s army said Wednesday that personnel would each donate one day’s salary to up to 3.2 million people affected by worst floods in living memory.

The move by the most powerful institution in Pakistan follows growing public backlash against the civilian government and President Asif Ali Zardari over failures to provide food, water and sanitation to all survivors, as well as the refusal of over 150 parliamentarians to donate their salary to the cause.

Record rains last week triggered floods and landslides that washed away entire villages and ruined farmland in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and central Punjab provinces.

Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani announced the “donation of one day salary of all ranks of Pakistan Army” to the prime minister’s relief fund for those affected by the floods.

“Army is working at full pace and capacity to extend maximum help to the people”, he said in a statement.

LAHORE: Over 150 members of the Punjab Assembly have refused to donate their one-month salary to the Chief Minister Relief Fund for the flood victims. Majority of the MPAs who refused to donate their salary are from the PPP, PML-Q and Forward Bloc.

Senior Minister Raja Riaz, Haji Ishaq, Ashraf Sohna, Neelum Jabbar, Rana Tanveer Islam and Farooq Yousaf Gurki are yet to donate their one-month salary to the relief fund. Some MPAs have said their flood-hit constituencies also needed help. The PPP and PML-N MPAs say they are not bound to contribute their one-month salary to the relief fund on the appeal of the chief minister.

i think indians and pakistanis are way 2 emotional. look how people started to praising him, even though they know i.e., their own hard earned money, he is giving back which would be like 10 % of the 10% of the 10% of his earning. we have the same problem.

case hi extreme hai janab jaisi qaum waisay leader , hum khud elect kartay hain phir khud hi galiyan detay hain , for us choices are btw worst and sh*t !

Are u sure that it was his money and not the donations that he gathered from the Pakistanis living overseas.

P.S even if some how his zameer had taken a U turn and had suddenly and miraculously woken up from the long somber. Still 2.5mil is a very small amount compared to what he has stolen from Pakistan, and Pakistanis.

ha! u stole my words, hehehe just kidding but hes just playing an another game by showing public that hes doing something.......

BuT anywayys we need that money it doesn't really matter where it comes from.....(atleast for now!)

LONDON: President Asif Ali Zardari has donated a sum of 2.5 million pounds towards the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Britain Wajid Shamsul Hassan announced on Saturday at the launch of fund raising appeal at Pakistani High Commission.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, launched the campaign and vehemently defended his father’s visit to Europe despite the flooding disaster affecting up to 15 million people at home in Pakistan.

Opening a donation point at the Pakistani High Commission in London, the 21-year-old insisted his father was raising much-needed funds.

“He’s doing the best he can and what he thinks is best to help the people of Pakistan,” the Oxford University history graduate said.

“His personal presence in Pakistan would not be able to raise this much money,” he said, adding that multi-million dollar donations had been made by France, Britain and Abu Dhabi.

The Gulf emirate had “also promised to come and help in rehabilitation after the floods have receded, after the media have gone, and after people are not paying attention,” he said.

“If he thought he could be more useful in Pakistan, I’m sure he would be there,” Bilawal added.

Zardari has been criticised in Pakistan and by some in the Pakistani expatriate community for carrying on his visit, despite the devastating floods which have killed at least 1,600 people.

Bilawal became co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) alongside his father after the assassination of his mother, Benazir Bhutto, in 2007.

When asked about his plans to go into politics, he said he was focused on completing his education, “as my mother wished”. He added that he intended to continue his academic and political education and was considering studying law.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that the president is continuously monitoring the flood situation in the country and giving necessary directives for the relief efforts.

Talking to a private TV channel, he said that all relief departments, including the army, navy and air force had been fully mobilised for relief efforts.

Kaira added that the prime minister along with the cabinet members are fully involved to make sure that all national and international efforts are streamlined and flood victims got relief expediently.

He said that the president’s visit was necessary to put across Pakistan’s point of view in the backdrop of a controversial statement by British Prime Minister David Cameron.

He added that the flood situation in Pakistan was discussed in detail between the two leaders and the British government committed to extend maximum support to Pakistan in this connection.

Asked why Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi is not part of the president’s delegation, Kaira said it was up to the president to decide his delegation, and added that the foreign secretary was doing a better job in the absence of the foreign minister.

President Zardari donates £2.5m for flood relief fund

The donation was announced on Saturday in London by Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain Wajid Shamsul Hassan at the launch of a fund-raising appeal by Zardari's son and chairman of Pakistan People's Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Islamabad/London: President Asif Ali Zardari, under criticism at home for being in United Kingdom at a time of natural disaster in Pakistan, has donated £2.5 million (Dh14.65 million) to the relief fund set up for the teeming millions of flood victims, according to the Pakistani official media.

The donation was announced on Saturday in London by Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain Wajid Shamsul Hassan at the launch of a fund-raising appeal by Zardari's son and chairman of Pakistan People's Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Flood relief accounts have been opened in UK-based Pakistani banks to enable people to deposit their donations, the official report said. He has set up the PM Relief Fund and urged Pakistanis and millions of nationals working overseas to donate generously.

NDMA said foreign countries have pledged $92.8 million so far for the flood victims.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the 21-year-old son of President Asif Ali Zardari and slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, defended his father's trip to Britain, saying he had done more in Europe to raise money for flood victims than what he could have in Pakistan.

"This is not a time to play politics. We need to do what is necessary to help our brothers and sisters in Pakistan," he told reporters at Pakistan's High Commission in London.

Pakistani officials estimate that as many as 13 million people have been affected by the floods and some 1,500 have died.

"My father's doing all that he can to aid the people of Pakistan. His personal presence in Pakistan could not have done there what he did here," Bhutto Zardari said.

He added that Zardari raised money for the flood victims during his trips to Abu Dhabi, France and Britain.

Many speculated that Bhutto Zardari would accompany his father at a political rally yesterday and announce his intentions to formally enter Pakistani politics.

His father said it was only a matter of time before his son carried on the family's political dynasty.

There is so much controversy about how much Zardari gave as donation. Whether it was 2.5 million pounds or rupees. The Urdu news quoted above says he gave 5 million rupees. When there is so much controversy about the amount then I think it is just a sloppy public relations campaign and damage control by Zardari supporters. I think that if Zardari even donates one rupee it would be a miracle and it should be reported as breaking news all over the world.
