ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar on Friday said that Pakistan conducted successful Operation Zarb-e-Azb at the total cost of $1.9 billion that depended upon well-coordinated efforts of all stakeholders.

A Special Steering Committee meeting was held on Friday to discuss Fata’s Temporarily Displaced Persons (TDPs), Emergency Recovery Project, at the Economic Affairs Division.

Speaking on the occasion, the finance minister emphasised that the success of Zarb-e-Azb depended upon the well-coordinated efforts of all stakeholders.

He stated that the total cost of the operation was $1.9 billion, of which the cost of rehabilitation was $800 million;

$530 million was for security enhancement and the operational cost was $270 million of which the government had disbursed half. Similarly, the government has also spent $300 million for wheat subsidy and other TDP related expenses.

The minister noted that all the stakeholders, including the federal government, Fata, Safron and security forces, had worked diligently and in a coordinated manner in order to achieve the objectives of the operation for safe return of Fata TDPs.

He appreciated the efforts of World Bank for financing of $75 million for cash transfer support to Fata TDPs.

He directed Nadra to leave no stone unturned in preparation of software and mechanism that would pass the tests of all international standards of transparency as this was the hallmark of the government.

Dar inaugurated the Operations Unit for the TDPs at the Economic Affairs Division and issued instructions that the work of return and rehabilitation of TDPs must be completed by the end of 2016 as planned.

Affordable, lives are worth more than money. At least some 1.9 Billions have been used for the right cause otherwise they would have been gone in the pockets of Politician too.

It was a money is no object type of operation since it was necessary and pivitol for the survival of Pakistan and it's future. 1.9 is chump change compared to the benefits we will reap with the death of these terrorists.

This is surprisingly low. I expect the expenses incurred and a few other costs let us arrive at this, the damage to the economy of the displaced, the opportunity cost involved with a region at war, the cost ought to be higher.

Yet still it was worth every penny and we may yet benefit from it, even economically.

Adequate intelligence led missions lead to a lower total cost of each operation and the campaign in whole. The Pakistan Army has been doing this for the past decade and I have noted a distinct upward trend in efficiency and a decline in operation length and costs with each major campaign.
Powerful nations like the U.S. can attack, then set up a command centre then plan outwards from there. It requires a lot of resources but is efficient in causing the required 'shock and awe' effect.
Countries who are not as resource privileged, make up the difference with lengthy and intricate planning. This approach is extensively taken up in the scientific field as well.

Spend another $15 billion and fence the Afghan border.
Fences would be cut immediately and we would have to keep up the repair work all the time which would drain our resources constantly like a bleeding wound. We must mine the border extensively.

Mining is not feasible in long term. When population in area will grow in future children from both sides can trip the mines and there would be resentment.

We are not talking about a flimsy fence. A concrete tall block. It can be done, just need to spend the money to do it.
