Zaid Hamid speech leads to clash in university

PESHAWAR, March 6: Speech of a television anchor led to severe firing in the air with automatic weapons and protest demonstration on the premises of the Islamia College University here on Saturday.

At least 12 students were taken into custody by police from campus of the Peshawar University when they tried to create disturbance in a programme where an anchor of a private television channel Zaid Hamid was busy speaking to the students, police and students said.

The students also staged a protest demonstration and tried to chase the speaker but police controlled the situation by arresting the leading protesters. It was learnt that some students had also opened fire in the air but police did not confirm it.

An official of the campus police station told Dawn that a group of students had tried to beat the speaker Zaid Hamid but the personnel took timely action and overcame the situation.

The police source said the programme had been arranged despite the police reports about the possible reaction but the university administration did not pay attention to the reports of security agencies and permitted the programme.

However, a student Tariq Afghan of Pakhtun Students Federation told this correspondent that the students had pelted stones at the car of the TV anchor and chanted slogans against him.

The workers of Islamia College, another source said, had also shouted slogans against Zaid Hamid and condemned the university administration for giving permission to hold the programme. The IJT workers also displayed posters against the speaker.

“The students also chanted slogans against NWFP governor and university administration for what they described as an attempt to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the campus through controversial speakers,” the source said.

The Amn Tehrik leaders including Idress Kamal, managed to get the students released and held a demonstration against such speakers.

Mr Kamal told Dawn the Amn Tehrik leaders would hold a press conference on Monday against Zaid Hamid and those who had permitted him to speak in the university.

“We have already suffered a lot due to the suicide bombers and militants and do not want those promoting the extremists,” he said.

I was there and the bullets just passed closely. Carrying weapons inside the Campus is not allowed. Still they went and brought modern weapons and opend fire. They opend fire on the windows from ouside.


They are members of a group who's head is a fond vistor of India.

even a minister from ANP asked them not to stage fasad there but these goones were already briefed for doing so just for some cheap publicity.

Media people here know the reality of the group.


Besides those people who were doing hungama were more on fire because they were not given free passes.


All this drama was staged to carry on some mudslinging on Governor Owais Ghani whom Zardari and ANP people tried to change several times because he had done a lot for quelling the militancy.

I can tell you these students could care less if he claimed to be God himself. It;s what he stands for...war with our neighbors, sugar coating a dark period in our time which was created by people like him in the first place. Youth are sick of the image Pakistan portrays to the world and Hamid Bahi has a big role in this problem especially with the in sensitivities shown after Mumbai, when we are facing our own terrorist attacks.

One of the so-called student leader was saying "Dont talk about Pathan hospitality because what you have done to our guests in Waziristan" This protesting student was pointing about WHY Pakistan had started Operation against foreign terrorists from al-Qaeda.


Ejaz these few students were theirself confused enough what they were protesting for. It was just for the sake of publicity already planned.

And Yes one more thing they had joined hands with IJT students some 2 of then in white dress and one of them asked about kazab issue when mr Zaid clearly stated he beleive in Muhammad (PBUH) as the Last Prophet of Allah, then these fasadis had started changing the topic.

All this happend before the speech. There was no question of anything in the speech which amounts to supporting extremism as the speech was not at all yet started
