But there are forces out there who do not like this and are conspiring against my principle stand that marriage as understood culturally is not the same as holy matrimony.

Marriage is great, it's weddings I personally object to.

$30,000 for a week long party?
No thanks. I'll put a down payment on a house for that much.

Due the circumstance, I had a very simple ceremony.. we went there with the intention of engagement but thanks to joint conspiracy hatched by our parents, we got nikkahfied for the price of a simple engagement . Major costs were my family flying in from Islamabad and Boston (but that I didn't pay)
But still wedding function (walima) cost some money...but not a fortune.. And we are happy and didn't miss anything.
