Yet another soldier commits suicide; third in a week

Indo-Asian News Service

Jammu, October 28, 2006

Yet another Indian Army soldier committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Jammu and Kashmir's border district of Poonch, the third such "distress" death in a week.

According to officials, Sepoy P John Thomas of 1 Bihar Regiment had recently got posted to the Patti Manga area of the mountainous district of Poonch, close to the Line of Control with Pakistan.

On Friday evening he shot himself with his Insas rifle all of a sudden. He was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The cause of his act was not immediately known. The army has initiated an inquiry. Poonch's Senior Superintendent of Police SDS Jamwal said that the police have registered a case.

This is third incident of its kind in a week in this area in which soldiers have "opened fire in distress, killing themselves or their colleagues", police said.

The first incident happened on October 21 in Rajouri district in which a soldier killed his three colleagues and injured himself and another. On October 23 a soldier shot dead two colleagues and then killed himself in the same district.

The army has no explanation for these deaths

The killing of own collegues by Indian Army men is now become a rutine as they are being sent to serve in a most depressive envirnoment and under stress they resort to such killing.

its time to take a realistic approach towards Kashmire solution.

These fragging cases only reflect poor command by officers of those units, its got nothing to do with work pressure.

You mean like, not giving leave/time to visit family?

From what we see about American soldiers (like from the earlier wars) they came back from war, completely disturbed from the things their bosses made them do. A soldier has to follow orders. If those orders are ugly, then that'd plain suck.

That is what i saying Lemon

no leave, work pressure, work pressure, difficult area to work. kilings

it all lead to such incidents and it was not the only incident such had happend in the past too and this one was the third only in a week.

why the hell are they not given leaves? bloody bosses!!!
Poor management, plain and simple. I sent my chaps on leave every 3 months (annual leave and casual leave), even when there were 'orders' to stop leave. A soldier needs some R&R after every 3-4 months.

Asim, believe me its not that filmy. There are no ugly orders.

Throughout history we've seen far too many such orders given in lesser volatile places. And then human rights violations of Kashmir are world reknowned.

So I doubt your claim. It may be that the soldiers aren't killing themselves because of them but the ugly orders are there. If they do commit suicide for what they have done to women and children, perhaps then we know there is some humanity too within the Indian army.
