Envoy to Japan finally recalled
Diplomatic Correspondent
Bangladesh is recalling its ambassador to Japan AKM Majibur Rahman Bhuiyan, a senior foreign ministry official said yesterday amid media reports in Dhaka that he allegedly harassed a Japanese woman working at its Tokyo mission.
In a letter sent to the Tokyo mission yesterday, the government asked the ambassador to return home immediately and report to the foreign ministry, the official told the Daily Star, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"The government has recalled him following an unusual situation at the Bangladesh Embassy in Japan," said the official.
Foreign ministry officials said the ministry recently received several complaints against Majibur Rahman, including sexual harassment of a locally-hired Japanese woman.
The Bangladesh Ambassador in Seoul, who was sent to Tokyo to investigate the complaints, found Majibur guilty, two other sources at the foreign ministry said.
The probe report said the allegations against Majibur may affect Dhaka's good relations with Tokyo, according to the sources.
Majibur could not be contacted in Tokyo for his comments.
Career diplomat Ambassador Majibur joined the foreign service in 1986. Previously he served in the Tokyo mission as Counsellor. He also served as Bangladesh ambassador in Bhutan.
A section of Dhaka newspapers recently reported allegations of violating diplomatic norms against Bangladesh ambassadors in Oman and Nepal.
The government's response to these allegations was not immediately known.
Envoy to Japan finally recalled
From some of the posts from our worthy posters, one was led to believe that sleaze was not acceptable in a pious society like Bangladesh notwithstanding the decadent culture of others.
It does make one wonder if what was spouted was for the gallery or if it were really true.
Imagine a diplomat, educated, suave and who will claim he is a pious Muslim, acting in this manner, which in colloquial language would be termed as horny!
Would it be fair to assume that the posts espousing that in Bangladesh there is no hanky panky and that Shah Rukh Khan of India polluting the pious Bangladeshi minds is flying a tad high over the cuckoo's nest?
