Xiaomi Corp.’s run as China's leading mobile device manufacturer looks poised to continue as it unveils its first two devices that include 4G LTE mobile connectivity.

The privately held smartphone maker announced Wednesday that a new model of its 4G LTE-enabled big-screen Redmi Note smartphone will be available at carrier China Mobile starting Aug. 12 and at China Unicom on Aug. 26, selling for just $162.:enjoy:

The world's eyes are on Xiaomi, a four-year-old upstart that last quarter surpassed Samsung Electronics Co. (KRX: 005930) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in smartphone shipments and sales in China. Thus far, Xiaomi has not catered to China’s budding 4G LTE market, but soon it will have two such devices, the Redmi Note and coming Xiaomi Mi 4, which also has not yet been released to the market.

A prime aspect of the new Redmi Note is that its 4G LTE mobile connectivity has not affected its price. Its low price points have made devices in the Redmi line among Xiaomi’s most popular. A recent report from the market research firm Canalys indicates that the success of the Redmi line largely drove Xiaomi’s growth during the April-June quarter.

The new Redmi Note will have slightly different specifications than the original, such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and a less powerful 3,100mAh battery; it will also be 10 grams lighter. However, it will have the same 5.5-inch display, 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera as the original.

While the 4G LTE Redmi Note is gearing up for its launch in China, the Xiaomi Mi 3 flagship smartphone is big news in India. Recent reports indicate that 150,000 units of Xiaomi’s Mi 3 smartphone sold out in just two seconds on Tuesday, during its third stint of availability in the country.

Xiaomi is known for releasing its devices in small batches to drum up demand. During prior Xiaomi Mi 3 flash sales in India, 20,000 units of the $230 device sold out in 38 minutes and 50 seconds on July 22, while 10,000 units of the Mi 3 sold out in just five seconds last week. CyberMedia Research analyst Tarun Pathak says demand for the Xiaomi Mi 3 is now 10 to 15 times its availability.

After more than 150,000 customers pre-registered for the flash sale, an equal number of unregistered users also logged on to purchase a Xiaomi Mi 3. In addition to the sheer speed that the device sold out, there were also technical issues with the Flipkart e-commerce Website where the Mi 3 was sold. Pathak says these circumstances could steer consumers away from Xiaomi and toward similar value-for-money smartphones like Motorola’s (NYSE: MSI) Moto G.

But Xiaomi has some big advantages against low-cost competitors. Ramon Llamas, smartphone research manager at IDC, told CNN Money that what sets Xiaomi’s smartphones apart is that they are Android devices that look like iPhones.

Xiaomi is also known for its high-end devices that sell for a fraction of the price of premium smartphones marketed by its competition like Apple and Samsung. The Xiaomi Mi 3 in particular includes a 5-inch 1080p display, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 high-end processor, 2GB RAM and 13-megapixel camera for just $230, while Samsung Galaxy flagships and iPhones sell for upwards of $600.

Following global smartphone market leaders like Apple and Samsung, Chinese smartphone manufacturers are adopting the fingerprint recognition function for their strategic smartphones one after another. Not only mobile security, but also the fingerprint recognition function are becoming essential to smartphones.

According to industry insiders on August 11, China’s Huawei is known to put the fingerprint recognition function in its strategic smartphone ‘Ascend D3,’ which will be introduced at Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Germany this coming September. Then, OPPO is planning to adopt the fingerprint recognition function in its premium model that it will release within this year. As Chinese companies, which are encroaching on the global smartphones market, are adopting the fingerprint recognition function one after another, fingerprint recognition has become a must-have item, not an option. “After Apple and Samsung introduced the fingerprint recognition function to their strategic models, Chinese makers are catching up at an accelerated pace,” said industry insiders. “Fingerprint recognition is becoming a default function of premium smartphones.”

As mobile security has become an important topic, the fingerprint recognition function began to draw public attention. Apple acquired Authen Tec, a fingerprint recognition solution provider, back in 2012, and adopted the fingerprint recognition function in the iPhone 5S that it released last year. Following Apple, Samsung Electronics implemented the fingerprint recognition function in its strategic smartphone Galaxy S5 this year. The two companies will also adopt the fingerprint recognition function in their next smartphones scheduled to be launched in the second half, i.e. the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy Note 4. Pantech, Gionee and Fujitsu also released products with the fingerprint recognition function.

In particular, what attracts public attention is that China’s 2G smartphone manufacturer OPPO adopted the fingerprint recognition function. Apple and Samsung, leading the global market, have been performing poorly in the Chinese market because of local companies like Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE. Xiaomi, which became No. 1 in the Chinese smartphone market in terms of Q2 shipments, is also considering adopting the fingerprint recognition function in its 2G model.

“Xiaomi is also contacting companies related to fingerprint recognition,” said another industry insider. “As the fingerprint recognition function is considered essential to premium smartphones, it is highly likely to be adopted.” A market research firm HIS forecast that the shipments of smartphones with the fingerprint recognition function would increase from 46 million units last year to 525 million in 2017.

As Chinese smartphones makers joined the bandwagon, applications (apps) utilizing fingerprint recognition or payment services are also expected to be invigorated in earnest. Apple used fingerprint recognition for cell phone unlock, app download and payment. Samsung Electronics also adopted fingerprint recognition for payment service, etc.

Upcoming Huawei Ascend P7 Successor with Sapphire Display to Give Competition to Apple iPhone 6

The Chinese multinational Huawei released its Ascend P7 handset recently in June. However, according to recent reports, the company is already working on a successor to Huawei Ascend P7.

Huawei's CEO, Richard Yu, revealed in an interview recently that the company will unveil "shocking" devices in the near future:coffee::azn::enjoy:. To corroborate the aforesaid point, he apparently showcased a Huawei Ascend P7 handset out of his pocket. However, this handset had a sapphire display on it. It is worth noting that, the currently available Huawei Ascend P7 does not come with sapphire display. Instead, it comes with the standard IPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass protection, according to Phone Arena.

If this is not interesting enough, Richard challenged a random reporter to bring a knife and try to crack the handset's display. Nevertheless, the CEO did not confirm if Ascend P7 will get an upgraded version or will it be a completely new handset replacing the current Ascend P7.

Notably, Apple iPhone 6 is expected to come with sapphire crystal display on its release. However it looks like the iPhone 6 has got a competitor in Ascend P7's successor. Interestingly, Verizon launched a new Android handset recently dubbed as "Kyocera Brigadier" specific to the U.S markets with sapphire shield display.

The currently available Huawei Ascend P7 features a 5.0-inch IPS LCD display with 1,080 x 1,920 pixels screen resolution and 441 ppi pixel density. The handset is powered by a solid quad-core (HiSilicon Kirin 910T) Cortex-A9 processor, clocked at 1.8 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. In addition, the handset runs on Android OS v4.4.2 (KitKat).

When it comes to memory, the Ascend P7 offers 16 GB of internal storage and microSD card support for expansion up to 64 GB. Moreover, the smartphone houses a good 13 MP rear-facing camera unit with LED flash and a surprisingly good 8 MP shooter as the secondary unit. Also, the device is backed by a non-removable Li-Po 2500 mAh battery unit.

As far as the sales goes, Huawei reported that the company sold a total of 3 million Ascend P6 units thus far. In addition, the recently released Ascend P7 is also selling as expected. However, the sales growth is mainly based out of homeland China, says Phone Arena.

Apart from Ascend P7's successor, Huawei is also busy with the upcoming Ascend Mate 3 and the Ascend D3. The phones are expected to be unveiled in IFA 2014 in September.

I can predict the mobile market will absolutely different in next 5 years. Xiaomi don't have it's own base band chip that will be a problem.

I just wonder will Huawei sell it's mobile CPU to it's competitors when the KIRIN CPU totally matured?

Huawei is a handset maker itself。Contradiction of interests?

Maybe Huawei can spin-off Hisilicon but remain the controlling shareholder by selling a small stake in the company to a few strategic investors with a view for possible IPO in the future。
