After a series of leaks and teases, popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi finally took the wraps off its new flagship smartphone, the Mi 4, today.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun took to the stage amid rapturous applause from its fans to announce the Android device, which takes a huge step up from its predecessor by finally using metal — though only for its frame. That is still a notch above its fellow Android rival Samsung, which only manufactures plastic devices. The Mi 4, however, looks uncannily similar to the iPhone.

The Mi 4 sports a 5-inch 1080p screen, and is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor. It comes equipped with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory and runs on a 3080 mAh battery. The Mi 4 also includes a 13-megapixel rear camera, and an upgraded front-facing camera of 8 megapixels.

The Mi 4 will be available for CNY 1,999 (approximately $322) for the entry-level 16GB model. The 64GB version will cost CNY 2,499, that’s around $403. Xiaomi hasn’t when the phone will be available outside of China, however.

The device supports 4G, but initially only the TD LTE standard that covers all three of China’s carriers. The company says support for the international FD LTE standard will come before the end of the year, so it seems like the phone may delayed going on sale outside of China.

Lei said that the Mi 4 is the fastest smartphone in the world, that’s the very same claim he made when the Mi 3 was launched in September last year. He also emphasized how much work was taken to balance the design of the Mi 4 with the battery power. The latest device can last around a day and a half without charging on a “normal” usage, he says. It also makes use of speedy charging, which can charge up to 60 percent in just an hour.

Xiaomi has made a name for itself selling smartphones packed with high-end specs at lower prices than its peers, including Samsung and HTC. It recently announced a new milestone afterselling 26.1 million smartphones in the first half of this year, which already surpasses the number of units sold for the whole of 2013.

The company is kicking its overseas expansion into high gear with recent launches in Malaysia, the Philippines and India, after it made its initial step beyond the Greater China region with alaunch in Singapore early this year.

The Mi 4 is set to continue this momentum, as Xiaomi seeks to expand not only beyond its loyal fan base in China, but also conquer even more overseas markets. Lei previously stated that the company expects to ship 40 million smartphones for 2014, but he said the figure could reach as many as 60 million. Lei also expects Xiaomi to ship 100 million smartphones next year.

BEIJING, China -- Apart from announcing the new Xiaomi Mi 4, Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun pulled a "one more thing" at the press conference and announced a new fitness band. The Xiaomi Mi Band is the company's first wearable gadget, and comes with a set of nifty features that are pretty impressive.

The Mi Band will retail for the ridiculously low price of just 79RMB (which converts to $13, £7.5, AU$13.5). It has a 30 day battery life, which is impressive compared to some of the smartwatches and fitness bands on the market today. It also doubles up as a discrete alarm clock.

Another cool feature that was announced is its ability to work as a proximity security unlock for your Xiaomi smartphone. If you hold your phone in the same hand as you're wearing the band, the phone will automatically unlock without requiring a password. It will not work if you're holding the phone in your other hand.

Global availability was not revealed.

Xiaomi Mi 4 debuts: 5-inch screen, top specs, steel body

Jul 22, 2014

At its annual conference in Beijing, Xiaomi has unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 4, naturally called its fastest phone ever. Sporting some of the best hardware in the mobile market today, all crammed in a 5-inch smartphone with a stainless steel frame, Xiaomi's latest and greatest is poised to yet be another fast seller in China. And yes, it does look a tad like the iPhone, which is something that Xiaomi might have been consciously going for.

To some extent, Xiaomi's press event has a tinge of Apple in it, especially with its focus on minute details, just to show how much thought has been put into every nook and cranny of the smartphone. Previous leaks have already hinted at a body with rounded corners, but it wasn't exactly evident back then that it would look almost like an iPhone clone. It doesn't help that Xiaomi would often compare the Mi 4 with the iPhone throughout its presentation. Like the iPhone, it has eschewed the more affordable plastic material for a more premium stainlesss steel body. Despite that, it still manages to clock in only 149 grams in weight.

Even without comparing itself to the iPhone, the Xiaomi Mi 4 can stand proud among the current roster of smartphone flagships. Sure, its screen doesn't reach up to the Quad HD resolution of the LG G3, but even the Samsung Galaxy S5 has the same 1080p Full HD. What's more, like the HTC One M8, it comes in at only 5-inches, making it still quite manageable even with one hand. It has the fastest version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 running the show at 2.5 GHz. RAM is at a premium 3 GB, so far the highest in any smartphone in the market. When it comes to storage, there are two configurations, one 16 GB and another at 64 GB, with no word on a microSD card slot.

The cameras won't probably stand up against the Sony Xperia Z2, but at 13 and 8 megapixels for back and front, respectively, with Sony CMOS sensors for that matter, they are more than decent. In terms of connectivity, the Xiaomi Mi 4 also has it all. It has 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, GPS, A-GPS, and Glonass for location(No Beidou?), TDD-LTE and even LTE Cat4 for mobile networks. And that large 3,080 mAh battery will give you enough juice to last you at least a day of moderate to heavy use.

Xiaomi has already put a 1,999 RMB ($322) price tag on the 16 GB model and a 2,499 RMB ($403) for the 64 GB one. As for availability, the Xiaomi Mi 4 will be available on China Unicom starting July 29, China Telecom in August, and Chine Mobile 4G in September. The smartphone only comes in two basic colors of black and white, but colorful, and even textured, back covers can be purchased later on. Perhaps the remaining question is whether this is the Xiaomi that finally reaches the US shore, to finally reveal whether Xiaomi's homeland success can be replicated in the West as well.
