'New bin Laden' poses threat to Britain
Tue May 10, 2011 11:59AM
The UK security apparatus claims the Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda has been heavily involved in recruiting extremists in Britain.
British security officials said the al-Qaeda branch led by US-born preacher Anwar al-Awlaki -- dubbed the new bin Laden -- has recruited and trained dozens of militants in Yemen, some of whom have returned and might be plotting terror attacks inside Britain, the Sunday Times reported.
The report quoted security officials as claiming that almost 200 extremists have received training in Yemen and returned to pose the single most potent threat to Britain.
Threats are considerably higher after the killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin-Laden at the hands of US special troops in Pakistan last week, said the report.
Security services say the recruits from Britain are now either active in terrorist plotting or have been spiritually recruited to the cause of violent extremism by the Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda, said the newspaper.
The Sunday Times' report claimed that hundreds of Britons had travelled to Yemen in the past two years for Arabic or religious training and fallen under the influence of Awlaki.
The allegations came as US reports, on Thursday, claimed that a
drone attack in Yemen has failed to kill one of al-Qaeda's most influential figures.
This is while Yemen's defense ministry said the missile fired by the US drone hit a car in the province of Shabwa carrying two brothers, identified by Yemeni officials as Musa'id and Abdullah Mubarak, both of them civilians.
