I see this need among Pakistanis to denigrate their pre-Islamic heritage again and again.

Perhaps it is because some (or many) of them are still not comfortable with the decisions that were made for them and need frequent reassurance of some sorts. Whether it is by by being happy at seeing some random person convert to Islam or denigrating their ancestors and their religion.

The best thing will be to be comfortable under the skin with the facts and their identity and history. It is not an easy task anywhere for Muslim converts unfortunately.
