The world’s largest single-location solar park of 1,000 megawatts (1 gigawatt) is nearing completion in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.

With 900 MW of the 1,000 MW already commissioned at the Kurnool Ultra Solar Park, and the remaining to be fully operational next month, it has already become the largest such park outpacing 648 MWsolar park developed by Adani in Tamil Nadu and Topaz Solar Park of 550 MW in California.

‘Major achievement’

Taking through the project site located about 280 km from Hyderabad, Ajay Jain, Principal Secretary (Energy), said this is a major achievement. The park has been developed under the solar parks scheme of MNRE and set up by Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Corporation, a joint venture company wherein 50 per cent equity is held by SECI, 41 per cent by AP Genco and 9 per cent by Nredcap.

About ₹7,000 crore has been invested in the park by developers and the government.

Collective effort

Of the 1,000 MW, 500 MW has been implemented by Greenko which had acquired the assets of the bankrupt company Sun Edison, 350 MW by Softbank Energy, both at ₹4.63 per kWh, Azure Power 100 MW and Adani 50 MW, the latter two at ₹5.13 per unit with domestic content. The project also get bundled with NTPC thermal project, bringing the tariffs down to ₹4 a unit, G Adiseshu, MD of APSPCL, said.

The solar park is spread over 5,811 acres of land. The plant packs about 40 lakh modules. The Centre has allotted ₹200 crore to the state to develop the park infrastructure.

The state has initiated three other solar parks at Ananthapuram I and II (500 MW each), and Kadapa Ultra Solar Park of 1,000 MW.

With the commissioning of the solar park the installed capacity has gone up to 1,867 MW in AP, making it the state with highest generation capacity outpacing Rajasthan (1,812 MW), Jain said.

The State now has 6,052 MW of installed renewable projects.

With the drastic drop in solar process and big capacity addition, the state plans to expedite solar project implementation and put on hold coal projects.

The single largest solar park in the world, with a maximum capacity of 1,000 megawatts, is nearing completion in India. The nine-square-mile Kurnal Ultra Mega Solar Park, which has cost 70 billion rupees ($1.09 billion) of both public and private money to construct, contains 4 million solar modules.
The park is located in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh state, which in recent years has distinguished itself as the solar power capital of India. It is a joint endeavor of India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Corporation, a private venture company mostly owned by government corporations.

Construction of the park began in December 2016, and it is expected to be fully operational in May. Already, 900 of the park's 1,000 MW capacity has been implemented. Kurnal Ultra has single-handedly made Andhra Pradesh the Indian state with the highest solar power capacity, 1,867 MW. In second place is Rajasthan with 1,812 MW.

Solar Power Now Costs as Much as Thermal Power In India

Renewable power activists and energy industry professionals alike are impressed with the speed and efficiency of the Kurnal Ultra project. Bids for the project in April 2015, and only two years later the project is nearing completion.

"This means that the solar park model is working," said P. Vinay Kumar, COO of Greeniko Energies, which is building another solar power park in Andhra Pradesh. "We are able to scale up capacities faster. Also, the IPPs [independent power producers] are unburdened of the responsibility of land acquisition and constructing evacuation infrastructure, the activities that governments are better at doing."

"We have reached a tipping point in energy pricing and the scale is tilting in favour of solar over conventional fuel based power generation. Since it is commercial attractiveness that will drive demand in future, the clean energy capacity targets may no longer be prime drivers of demand. If the price trend continues, solar energy may take centre stage in the power mix," Kumar said to India Climate Dialogue.

Along with Kurnal Ultra, three other large solar power parks are planned for construction in Andhra Pradesh: Ananthapuram I and II (500 MW each) and Kadapa Ultra Mega Solar Park at 1,000 MW. Kadapa is expected to be operational in 2018.

These parks are part of an Indian initiative to reach 100,000 MW in solar capacity in 2022

Huh? I think the largest Solar power plant in the world is somewhere in China with some 10 Exa watt capacity? Isn't it? At least that what some Chinese posters here in PDF said.

Update:
Oh that was 850 MW on Tibetian plateau. But Chinese are working hard to get their 2 Gigawatt (2000 MW) solar plant in Ningixia online

https://cleantechnica.com/2016/09/28/2-gw-solar-project-china-will-worlds-largest/

The news is from 2016 sept so may be it might we working already.

Update:
Oh Karnataka is also going for a 2000 MW solar park

This is just 200 KM from Bengaluru. Good! Karnatka always making India proud!

Semantics. Karnataka, Kerala, Banana.
You will get me killed one of these days :). Natives here are a bit touchy about Kannad identity lately because of all the mess with Tamil Nadu.

Anyways, lets catch up in some other forum. My ban hammer sense is tingling (HA! Take that you Chinese!). I have just called a certain 'American Pakistani' as Mr. Pakistine and they are now after my blood.

Worlds Largest Solar Power Plant now operational has Chinese foot prints in it.
All the solar panels were imported from China via shiploads.
Only the assembly took place in India.
What a dubious feat that India now claims to have achieved!

Silly point, If a man drives a French Car to get to work , drinks Scotch whisky, wear italian shoes, smokes American Cigarettes or Cuban Cigars , uses Chinese assembled Cell phones and lap tops etc , uses a Parker / Cross pen.

Can he not claim credit for the sterling work he does in India using all of the above !!

.

Not trying to be rude, but it is fair to say that these days even Your Mom might have Chinese foot print, literally because of the socks she might be wearing may be made in China.

Will the energy generated used by the Chinese or Indians?
Will the jobs generated employ Chinese or Indians?
Welcome to 21st century comrade! We call this global commerce. This project was a capital investment into means of generating more jobs and more income. I will say it is money well spent which will pay for itself in coming decades.

Unlike those liberal activists who just go on Dharna, these project do something meaningful for the people at large.

Before writing moronic stuff (gibberish) sans any International experience/exposure on such stuff against any classification involved therein, you would have been better off in not starting any conversation with other members on such matters.

Let me see what knowledge you possess, and this is to put you on record for further interrogations on the same.

For example; Bangladesh has a certain garments/apparels/textiles/clothings quota to export to EU duty free.

And this is done regularly till THAT (yearly) quota gets exhausted.

To avail such benefits from Bangladesh (to export to EU through their territory), many Indian companies have transfered their production lines there in Bangladesh.

When the product gets exported to any country.
The onus is on that exporter to furnish certificate of origin, beside the Invoice, packing list and bill of lading/Airway bill (Insurance not mandatory)

Based on above criteria, many exporting nations tried to circumvent EU, by sending their shipment of screwdriver assembly products. In other words; In a makeshift factory, they assemble their foreign product and sell to EU with Bangladesh certificate of origin under the same quota or the re-exports.

Given some years, the EU found this loophole and started working on it.
Later, there was a ruling that any product with certificate of origin of quota country must have 60% of material value of that (quota) country from where the shipment has been effected and originated.

Now a days this is a rule of thumb in International IMPEX trade whereby the product is certified to be mainly & originally belonging to a quota country - provided the product has 60% content of that quota country to avoid a circumvention.

So in a nutshell, what is allegedly made in India (in case of solar park) is really not the case.
Since more than 60% content belongs to China.

If for example, the Indians want to export the same dismantled solar park to EU or the US, they would not be able to provide true certificate of origin, just because it has no Indian contents.

So what is Indian solar park after all (internationally speaking)?

Just came from Jakarta after attending a B2B seminar. But it has no bearing on our dialogue though.
