One of the largest solar power project, funded by the government of New Zealand is about to be completed in central Bamyan province of Afghanistan.
The $18 million solar power project which is considered to one of the world’s largest off-grid power systems which will provide electricity for 2500 homes and commercial properties in this province.
The project built by Timaru Companies Sustainable Energy Services international (SESI) and Netcon , part of the New Zealand Government’s International aid programme in Afghanistan.
Bamiyan solar power project was continued by the project managers despite five New Zealand troops were killed by insurgents last year ahead of the troops withdrawal from the province.
At least 15 Afghan trained engineers and nearly 40 tradesmen along with the labourers were involved in the project, besides the project created jobs for Afghan women.
The solar farm is expected to be operation within the next month, and the electricity would initially be used to provide light to the town, and will eventually cover communications and refrigeration.

2500 homes are not that much, but it is a beginning, and it is good for the rural development.

2500 homes beginning is not as modest as you claim. It can be huge hit in Pakistan, provided govt. liberalize its energy policy.
Do you have an state controlled institution of supply of electricity?

Yes our electricity supply firm is state owned, it is called DABS (Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat)

I hope they'll made better projects in the future as well ... :pop:

Yes, the solar power sector has a huge potential in both of our countries, but unfortunately our governments aren't really paying so much attention to this sector.
