BYD, the Chinese multinational company and world's largest electric vehicles manufacturer with turnover of $250 billion, is all set to enter Pakistan.

The development was announced by Pakistan Electric Vehicles & Parts Manufacturers and Traders Association (PEVPMTA) General Secretary Shaukat Qureshi while talking to local media.

“Toyota, the world auto giant, for the first time signed an agreement on November 7, 2019, to develop Electric Vehicles with BYD, the world's largest electric vehicles manufacturer, with 44 plants around the globe employing 250,000 personals, with turnover of $250 billion," he said. “Scenario will definitely change in Pakistan as well, with the Japanese companies roll out their models by 2024," he added.

Qureshi said that the country's auto sector was totally dominated by the Japanese brands, which had yet to come up with a comprehensive response towards EV and its technology. It is pertinent to inform that Pakistan auto sector is dominated by three Japanese automakers i.e. Suzuki, Toyota and Honda.

Meanwhile, Adviser to Prime Minister on climate change Malik Amin Aslam has said that electric vehicles will initially reduce import bill by US$2 billion per annum. Terming EV 2019 as best policy in the region, he said that the policy, which had been promulgated recently, would provide cheap mode of transportation, reduction in carbon emission and decrease import bill.

The advisor added that the government would issue SROs related to EV policy, 2019, shortly in order to commence the process of introducing EV in the country.

People need to realize that they may cost more initially but with little or no maintenance and engine etc they pay off handsomely in a long run.

In order to promote this the Government needs to offer subsidies in taxes so that 1) People wean off Petrol/Diesel vehicles, 2) reduce import bill of Oil and 3) reduce harmful emissions and protect our environment.

I would submit you are not the market for them to sell these cars; it is other international and developed markets, which should be fine with Pakistan. On the other hand, Pakistan should ensure majority employment is not bringing in Chinese workers into Pakistan, similar to what is done on CPEC projects. If not, subsidizing them may have minimal benefits for Pakistan and may result in decades of revenue loss due to subsidies being offered.

The Chinese government is under immense pressure to keep its people employed, and trying to get Chinese workers over in other countries is not unique to Pakistan's situation. BTW, they opened a Chinese plant for making windshields and other automotive materials in Detroit a couple of years ago, and they brought in cheap Chinese labor into the US too, paid locals meager wages, and ultimately failed.

Actually it will be cheaper even with Rs.20/unit if you charge 100kw/hr battery it will cost maybe 2200 with taxes for 500 km. On the other hand car with 18km/L average will cost RS.3100 maintenance is extra. The real problem will be initial cost as electric cars are expensive to buy. The best thing government can do is to convert urban transport to electric buses.
