World's largest airport starts construction in China

Didn't they make a new airport during Beijing olympics? Nice planning:lol:

That is only the third terminal of the Capital International Airport.

good going china  this gives us inspiration so that in future we may too have world class infrastructure. hope the Delhi-Mumbai chain of megacities is started soon :)

130 mn. :O

nothing to be so surprised, the op has not highlighted the "annually" part in the paragraph. that means number of footsteps falling on that piece of land during a period of one YEAR. that's equal to a week of pedestrians walking on times square or brigade road (Bangalore) India for a week ?

China has started construction on a brand new super-airport that will have nine runways and be roughly the same size as Bermuda.

The Beijing Daxing International Airport is set to open in 2015, making the Chinese capital the world's busiest aviation hub, stealing the crown from the current holder, London.

It will handle 370,000 passengers a day at the 21 square-mile site in the southern suburb of Daxing.

The new airport is a reaction to the Beijing Capital International Airport currently being at bursting point, despite its Terminal 3 - bigger than all of Heathrow's five terminals combined - opening three years ago.

Cao Yunchun, a professor at the country's Civil Aviation University, told the Telegraph: 'The existing airport in Beijing has an annual capacity of 75 million passengers. Last year it handled 73 million. In two years, it will be totally packed. And it cannot be expanded infinitely.

The new site is about an hour's drive from the city centre, but plans are afoot for an extension to Beijing's metro, and even a high-speed train line.

other sources say it will open in 2015, not 2017 as originally thought.

it is confirmed that the new airport will have 9 runways, however, only 8 will be for civilian purposes and one will be set aside for military use.

.
wow that will be awesome...china knows how to do things quick..

They are contrarian indicators. Worry when there are no China naysayers.

The opposite also holds true for hype, hype, hype, shining, incredible and $35 tablets.

Would you cut the crap. No body says India is as developed as China today. We all know India is about 10 years behind China. Let me prove my point.

Clearly Indian airports are doing much better than their Chinese counter parts 10 years ago. It was only after 2003, China could match India's statistics. Now STFU.

LOL, this is the "hype, hype, shining, incredible" that Aramsogo was talking about.

Let's check a neutral source, like "The Economist" for instance.

According to the Economist, India is about 40 years behind China in terms of development indicators.

The lag in social progress is much longer. A child’s odds of surviving past their fifth birthday are as bad in India today as they were in China in the 1970s.

I know that's why I said India is ten years behind China at the get go. To be exact, it is about 7 years behind.

---------- Post added at 10:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:40 AM ----------

in that case it's even better, i dont think 40 years back any Chinese airports were even in top ten list ...:lol:

In 1998, not one Chinese airport was in top 30 list. Go figure.

Using India as measurement of China's success is not a positive attitude. United States should be the measuring rod, not a country we left behind years ago. Do you think high achieving students in schools compared themselves to those performing poorly? No, because they look to their betters for ways to improve.

Anyways, I have no doubt about China's speed of construction or its ability to get mega projects done. What I am concerned about is the quality of these projects. Sometimes in our rush to get things done, we do cut some corners. For example, they build a highway in my hometown about 5 years ago, and now it already eroded into very poor condition and may need to be rebuilt. I rather they slow down a little and make things a bit sturdier.
