World's Best-Selling Car Gets Facelift in Toyota's China Bet

(Bloomberg) — For Toyota Motor Corp., China wasn’t always the first pit stop when it came to unveiling key car models. But this time, it’s different.

The Japanese automaker took the wraps off the all-new Corolla — and its China-only twin Levin — at a global premiere in Guangzhou on Friday, hours before it was put on display in California. The move marks Toyota’s deeper push into the world’s biggest auto market where it is trailing rivals.

The Corolla, the staid workhorse that seldom makes heads turn but is still loved universally, is getting a facelift at a time sedans are losing their sheen in the U.S. while gaining followers in China. The new models will offer features tailored for Chinese buyers, including a 12.1-inch display and an air-cleaning system to remove pollutants, as well as more connectivity functions. Sales will start in 2019.

China takes lead

China overtook the U.S. to become the largest market for the compact sedan last year, with the combined annual deliveries of Corolla and Levin reaching half a million and taking the lead in the segment.

“They are the most important vehicles for Toyota here in China,” Kazuhiro Kobayashi, Toyota’s China chief, said in Guangzhou. “These new models embody our drive in electrification, intelligence and informatization.”

Amid a sharp demand shift to SUVs in the U.S., Toyota is increasingly counting on China to sustain the success story of the world’s best-selling model of any carmaker over the last 30 years. Reflecting the slumping demand for sedans in the U.S., Toyota plans to slow one of the three assembly lines at its Camry assembly plant in Kentucky next month.

In China, the Corolla and Levin contribute about 40% of Toyota’s sales and are key to changing the automaker’s also-run status. Toyota sold 1.29 million vehicles in China last year and is set to “greatly exceed” its 1.4 million-unit target for this year, Kobayashi said.

That compares with sales of more than 4 million units each at Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co. Japanese competitors Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co., though smaller globally, have also been quicker than Toyota in ramping up sales in China.

“Toyota believes it has potential to raise its market share given it is low compared with the U.S.,” said Janet Lewis, an analyst at Macquarie Capital Securities in Tokyo. “The Corolla is a less important product for the U.S. market than for China in light of declining sedan volumes. Products tend to be tailored for the biggest markets — in this case it is the Corolla and Levin for China.”

Toyota has traditionally been concentrating on the U.S., even after China overtook it to become the world’s largest car market in 2009. Now though, the famously cautious Japanese manufacturing giant has added incentive to shift focus as China moves to loosen restrictions while the U.S. threatens to raise trade barriers.

Trade war

As of now Toyota has been largely unscathed, or even has actually benefited from the U.S.-China trade war. While China in July increased the levy on vehicles imported from the U.S. to 40%, it almost simultaneously lowered the duty on other imported cars to 15%. That has in particular benefited Toyota’s luxury Lexus vehicles exported from Japan to China.

That, coupled with continued strong demand for the outgoing Corolla and the new Camry, helped Toyota boost China sales by 13% in the first nine months this year, bucking an industry slowdown and leading the gains by major carmakers. This also has boosted confidence for Toyota to set its eye on tripling car production in China by as soon as 2030.

To be sure, Toyota’s future growth hinges on how the company embraces new-energy vehicles (NEVs). Under China’s cap-and-trade policy, automakers must obtain a new-energy vehicle score — which is linked to the production of various types of zero- and low-emission vehicles — starting January.

Toyota, which has been a laggard in pure-electric cars, had to speed up in NEVs. Unlike Volkswagen or General Motors, the conventional hybrids with which Toyota is the indisputable leader will be central to the company’s electrification efforts. Toyota intentionally put two gasoline-electric versions of the Corolla and Levin on display in Guangzhou, as sales of hybrid models have started to take off since it localized production in 2015.

“China’s unique project featuring local hybrid production since 2015 has been a great success and both have become star models with the support of Chinese customers,” Kobayashi said.

However, conventional hybrids are unlikely to be included as NEVs in China and it remains to be seen how far they can go without much government support that EVs and plug-ins receive. To find allies promoting the technology, Toyota has engaged in advanced talks to license its hybrid system to Chinese carmaker Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd., Bloomberg has reported.

“Hybrids are very important to Toyota’s China and global strategy, but it only works in China if other companies produce them,” Lewis said.

While the Corolla may be popular and loved the world over it has never been Toyota’s top selling sedan in the US. The larger Toyota Camry has always been their #1 sedan.

The low end Corolla (like the Nissan Sentra AKA Sylphy) has been labeled a “girl” car in the US. It still sells well and is popular with young women.

Even the Camry (as noted in the article) has slipped behind their SUV sales as the $25K Toyota RAV4 has overtaken both the Camry and the Corolla.

Doesn't matter, US market is not world leaders for cars. Everybody looks toward China market as world leader. If any car is the best seller in China. It is the best car. :enjoy:

Big cities like Beijing , Shanghai, Guangzhou.. all have restriction laws on cars, you can easily apply for 5-10 years but still couldn't get a number to buy a car, if China undo their restrictions, the number of cars in Chinese cities can easily be multiplied many times.

Just bad urban space planning. They are cramming you like sardines and limiting your options.

Who are "they", China encourages people to move out of the urban areas , in terms of city planning, China does it better than US , Chinese cities all have good public transport system, buses, subways, bridges and roads are second to none, comparing to China, US infrastructures are very rundown, US subways are like a trash dump. Most people can easily get around in Chinese cities by public transport while in US driving seems to be the only choice in most cities.

In most US cities families own multiple cars and there is no 10 year backlog. You obviously have a density issue. We learned about that from NYC. Almost all of our other cities don’t pack people in anywhere near like NYC. Just limiting the density to half of NYC improved things dramatically and solved the car problem.

For instance Boston is ranked 5th in the US in density but is only half of NYC. Every family has room for a car and most have more than one. Driving around is effortless during the day (other than rush hour) and now people have a choice other than buses (which run every few minutes, the subway, and taxi services).

Whereas all downtown areas are ghettos in US. That's great urban planning

Lol! There are 20,000 cities in the US. Stop being stupid. There’s cities with median household income over $100K. Their downtowns are far from ghettos.

In this case this is not true.

Levin is only sold in Japan and China, not anywhere else, if you want to get a Levin in US or Australia, you will need to import them. In rest of the world, you can only buy either Corolla Ascent or ZR Hybrid.

Chinese and US car market is completely different. Almost every car that hit in China (like Audi A4) is a dud in the US, and almost every car that hit in the US cannot sell in China. The number one selling car in the US is not a car, it's F-150 truck.

I must confess you guy's have some great urban space planning. It's dream. Open, wide roads, large space for houses etc. And all that open country. Envious.

The problem is the perception people have around the world is that all US cities are like NYC. The reality is most US cities are full of single family houses with private garages (for 1,2, and even 3 spaces) and/or driveways for family car(s).

I am now on 6th Corolla... my 3rd one is still with me... over 500k+ and odometer stopped; still going strong.

Toyota Camry is much better than Toyota Corolla - two different class of cars.
very different class of cars; before when it was big here... this is Corolla up to 1998; the local builds were based of celica platform. i still have my corolla 1998 model. 1.6/20valve engine. It was a unique combination and on the highway unbelievable performance at 150km/h+
