The world's population will reach the seven-billion mark on Oct 31, according to projections by the UN. It's a milestone, but also a wake-up call, a call to action. This special coverage introduces the basic facts about populous countries, challenges and problems caused by the spikes in human population.

The United Nations Population Fund predicts not only that the planet's population will reach 7 billion by Oct 31, but another billion will be here by 2025, and the total will reach 10 billion before the end of the century.

According to demographers, the world's population didn't reach 1 billion until 1804, and it took 123 years to hit the 2 billion mark in 1927. Then the pace accelerated — 3 billion in 1959, 4 billion in 1974, 5 billion in 1987, 6 billion in 1998.

"The constraints of the biosphere are fixed," Harvard University sociobiologist Edward O. Wilson wrote in his 2002 book, "The Future of Life."

Wilson predicted the Earth's resources could be stretched to support a population of 10 billion, just about where UN population estimators say growth will level out by the end of the century.

I don't know why people are afraid of increasing population factor. There were lot many nations before us in greater number and had a brilliant civilization too.

People are scared because of pressure on natural resources to sustain the ever increasing populatioin.. For example there is pressure on land to produce food, pressure on fuel to produce energy, more green house gases.. Effectively it pressurises the planet

As per the natural resources, the Earth is approx. dig up to 6 KM and 44 KM is still remaining with much more resources. So, don't think of that increasing population is pressurizing natural resources.

Well, the technology is not there to exploit the resources feasibly.. Let me tell you..Water is scarce.. Desalination in not an effective an proven technology to supply water.. Food is scare and global warming is effectively decreasing land yield.. You go for Genetically modified crops.. but you do not know whether it will be harmful for the human race.. Renewable energy is scarce.. nuclear energy is risky though it can produce a lot of electricity and gasoline and coal will die in 200 years .. So eefectively the current level of tecnology is ineefective to harness natural resources to feed ever increasing population.. The earth crust has iron... deeper in the earth there is manganese and ohter metals.. But not all resources are available and current technology cannot harness 50 km mining.. So no increasing population is not sustainable..

Hmmm 7 billion. Well we do have large swatches of unused land in Russia,Canada and Australia.

Thats for the Russians, Canadians & Australians to decide.

Side effect of modern life style resulting longer life expectancy.

We are not factoring a major war or natural disastors. In the past empires rising and falling have lead to wars between them. If america does not accept the hew world order and nukes get released that would decimate the worlds populations cos I amagine if america launched a few everyone would want to lauch some

My friend don't worry with the population life will continue. When u have 7 billion population u have 14 billion hands to work and 7 billion minds to think.

And you have 7 billion mouths to feed.

If only the wars end no matter the population hit 20 billion or more there will be enough resources (by resources I mean Food, and electricity, and to produce electricity there are many good ways ) to support such big population but to reach this result all wars should be ended.

But the corrupt Politicians chose other way of reducing population such as biological weapons, atomic weapon (just in min u can wipe out entire nation of millions) , so called shortage of food , water blah blah blah

This world in not just for Human but also for other living beings and v r destroying their habitat every where.

ya but then we do have 14 billion hands to work and 7 billion minds to innovate.

Dude just bcs more people are working in a field, it will not produce more. Its called over employment or under utilization of human resources. I think you are aware of the fact that 70% of the earth is water and in the 30% land about 1/3rd is said to be desert(both hot & cold). So in the end we are left with 2/3rd of land on which we have to live, work, establish industries and grow crops to the evergrowing population and at the same time sharing our living space with the different species of animals & birds both big and small. So...no, we are not in a position to support a booming population unless we find a way to live and farm the oceans.

We can debate about this forever, but there is a marked difference b/n us in the way we perceive population growth and that is mainly religious in nature.
