China is pushing forward at the frontier of genetic engineering. In a world first, The Telegraph reports China's amazing accomplishment.

"Scientists have coaxed the mutated DNA of human embryos back into healthy code in an experiment which could one day be used to cure a range of inherited diseases.

In a world's first, researchers in China proved it was possible to correct a single error in three billion letters of genetic code to remove the disease beta-thalassemia, a debilitating blood disorder.

British scientists hailed the research as a 'highly significant' advance.
...
'The work presented here uses a technique called 'base editing' which attempts to repair a mutation at the single letter (or base), resulting in the hopeful correction of the mutation. It does this without the need for breaking the double-stranded DNA.

More work is needed to assess the precision of this base editing technology (and) to fully investigate both efficiency and specificity of the technique.'

The Chinese research is published in the journal Protein and Cell."

If fixing this little thing is a some kind of an highly significant advancement...

Then for me to be handsome and smart seems still a long way go!

This is a really big deal, because China can cure a congenital defect like "the disease beta-thalassemia, a debilitating blood disorder" in human embryos.

.
i am going to park this on the same track as the artificial meat burgers.

something just doesn't feel right in this.

Yes. Of course I'm thinking this is just the beginning. Within our lifetime this will lead to other DNA corrective procedures so new born will not have genetic defects or born with an inherited disease.im hopefthis will lead to other medical breakthrough

Of course, because we are playing God. imagine next generation with a +5 IQ advantage, and another +5 IQ the generation after that. The countries that do this will have an immense advantage over all others and it will be impossible to catch up.

IQ scores are irrelevant when you bring God into the debate lol

The article said Chinese Scientist was able to prove that DNA can be corrected (ie, the first one to use it on Human Embyro), not they can correct mutated DNA sequence, it does not mean you know how and what to correct in the first place, it can make you smart, or it can make you dumb or make you anything or everything else in between..

the technique the Chinese scientist uses, known as CRISPR/Cas9 was engineered by Jennifer Doudna of US and Emmanuelle Charpentier of France in 2012. And is already used in any DNA cell sequence other than Human when the two engineered it in 2012.

The process, AS THE ARTICLE pointed out, is not really favourable in the West because of the ethic issue, and the scientist are quote saying China may become the wild-west of science. In fact, DNA can be corrected is a long standing belief but most people don't venture that far because of the aforementioned Ethic issue. Hence according for the lack of progress in this field.

uhhhh did you even read the article or just Wikipedia your way thru everything?

i'm atheist, but what i said was tongue in cheek. changing Human DNA is akin to "playing god", if you believe in the existence of god.

This truly is a major breakthrough.

Along with AI genes editing/engineering is the next big leap for science and humanity.

Applications of such genetic editing are limitless. From reprogramming genes to fight cancer to anti-aging to creating a healthy next generation.

Herein lies the morality part. Who will determine what are the limits to such an enterprise? Where the line could be drawn?

Regardless, genetic intervention is here to stay. Genetic medicine / gene editing is going to be a huge medical business. But then curing disease has always been business.... international pharma anyone?

@Shotgunner51 @ahojunk kind friends, such a topic needs a dedicated thread. Valuable information for serious students of China!

In science, you never know unless you try. And those who try, albeit all uncertainties and inherent risks, will come out advanced, even if the enterprise eventually fails.

This idea has allowed man to split atoms. It allowed man to land on the moon.

Usually, however, Western fascist and their boot-lickers will attempt to undermine others' efforts in one way or another. Their points are irrelevant because they are falling outside the course of historical progress.

If the West had really had an iota of moral compass, it would not wage immoral ears and bring death to many corners of the world utilizing a mercenary military.

What I said is ALL IN THE OP ARTICLE.

Actually, you need to ask yourself, did you even read the article, not me, if you don't know what I said is all quoted in the original article by OP.

LOL.

Now, if you do some research, you will know.

1.) The US has banned DNA test on Human Embryo since 2015.

http://www.nature.com/news/nih-reiterates-ban-on-editing-human-embryo-dna-1.17452

2.) CRISPR/Cas9 is a technology exist prior to 2008, but was only confirmed by Dr. Rodolphe Barrangou in 2008, and was re-engineered by the 2 Scientist mentioned above in 2012. Dr. Rodolphe Barrangou won a NAS award on Molecular Biology in 2017 because of that.

3.) China is indeed the first country in the world to tried CRISPR/Cas9 on human embryo in 2015, but it was already stated it can work on any cell/molecular structure. The west has banned such research on ethic ground, not on scientific ground.

Reread it again, the first paragraph then the second paragraph, it had weird sentence structure.

Mine or the OPs?

What I said is that Chinese Scientist from SYS University have made the first attempt on using CRISPR/Cas9 on Human Embryo, it never said it does anything on the embryo, only the ability to separate the gene that responsible for a genetic disease (which have long been able to do, and replace it with a normal gene, it was called "Base Editing") and you are talking about raising 5 IQ Point generation after generation. IQ wasn't even have any proven link to DNA to begin with, it (base editing) is not about that and as the article said, it have a LONG ROAD ahead to decode all 3 billions set of DNA sequence to know what and where and how to fix it. Giving that the obstacle of ethic was overcame.

The second paragraph of mine is to illustrate the history of CRISPR/Cas9, which was a product from a joint venture lab from US and France. And it was PROVEN to be effective on RNA and other Cellular Structure other than human since 2015.

What the Chinese Scientist do, and to the extend, the article OP post is actually judging the ethic side of the argument, about whether or not medical ethics can go and the worrisome trend that China becoming "Wild West of Science" because the evidently ignoring the world ethic standard on Performing DNA experiment on Human Embryo, which was banned by US and EU since 2015.

You do know experiment performed in Human are largely illegal and unethical in scientific world, right?

However, if you were talking about the first and second paragraph on OP article. It read

Which mean it is POSSIBLE to correct, not ability to correct a single error, all they did was used CRISPR/Cas9 on Human Embryo. Which is what Jennifer Doudna claim all along, to which CRISPR/Cas9 can be used to edit human gene. Dr Doudna was unable to do/test them because it was banned by NIH in 2015. What the Chinese did is confirm such argument.

Read the article again, and if you still don't understand, then it's time for you to get a dictionary.

it's not a good news.
rich people and poor people gap result in good DNA and bad DNA gap.
