FLEET of any modern jet fighter will be EXPENSIVE to maintain over the course of years (DECADES) due to the fact that airframes will become older and would be costlier to keep combat-worthy in accordance and also due to incorporation of newer set-of-technologies to cope with emerging threats over time.

The Korean War was started by North Korea. China attacked the UN forces.
The Vietnam War was started by the Vietnamese trying to get rid of their colonial status.
The North Vietnamese were supported by China and the Soviets in their efforts to subdue a large part of the Vietnamese which did not like communist rule.
The Afghan War was started by the 9/11 attacks. By hosting AQ the Taliban made themselves a legal military target. Stupid move which so far has cost them dearly.

Because if you look at the 50s designs and study their deployments, you will see that each design was essentially an execution of a narrow field of aviation. Take the F-104, for example, it was designed as a pure interceptor -- get there and do it fast.

Later decades have fewer designs but each design is more complex and expensive, and more versatile and lethal. The progress was and still is inevitable.

The F-22 and F-35 will defeat everything the 50s/60s/70s produced, and will defeat most of what the 80s/90s produced. Right now, the rest of the world is in the 80s and 90s.

While Iraq alone , officially stated 1.2 million deaths until 2007 while with loss of few hundreds American soldier.
If we do math, Overall millions+ died in these 18 years, with cost of few thousand U.S.A soldiers .
