World Bank sees 6.2pc GDP growth in Bangladesh in current fiscal year

Economic Correspondent: The World Bank has predicted that Bangladesh can attain 6.2 percent GDP growth in the current fiscal.

A report of the World Bank titled ‘Bangladesh Development -2014’ has made the prediction.

The report was unveiled at the WB office at Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday.

According to the report, inflation rate will be 7.4 percent, and number of ultra poor people will be 24.47 percent of the total population.

Zahid Hussain, lead economist in the World Bank’s South Asia Finance and Poverty group, presented the report.

Ignore the inflation - its quite common for a rapidly developing nation. Any measure to curtail inflation will lead to reduced economic growth, so its quite meaningless.

This is overall a wonderful position in terms of growth. Congratulations Bangladesh!

Inflation by itself is not as bad as it looks. The problem with inflation is that wages lag behind price rises - so it leads to widening disparity of income levels between rich and poor. A lot of the socialist governments see this as a bad thing - but not necessarily, since for a nation like Bangladesh, higher return on investment over salary leads to entrepreneurship opportunities which creates more jobs. Its a different thing for a developed nation because not as many jobs can be created in a short span.
