What's new

Work on AMCA to begin by Mid 2011

The design is similar to japanese ATD-X in looks ( atleast from some angles )..I seriously hope for cooperation with Japan/Israel/Sweden

2x 81 kn engines is kinda weak compare to other 2 engined 5th gen fighters with 155+kn each.

all the current fifth generation fighters are in the heavy category. The AMCA is intended to be light weight. Furthermore, I'm sure the thrust will be increased. Considering the first prototype is atleast a few years away from flying predicting the final engine specs from now is a little far fetched.

I don't think F-35 is in the heavy weight category. Its a single engine plane.

It is a Medium combat aircraft..and not a light one.

looks nice and sexy, but will it really take uptill 2025 to bring it into service, seriosly whats the point of even making it when a 6th generation plane would only be a few years away in other countries.....
even 2020 sounds late :(

Spot on! We will just run behind any latest developments and will end up delayed like LCA now is. Looking into future capabilities and techs should be the aim, UCAVs, unmanned fighters, or even 6. gen fighters, especially because we already commited to a 5. gen fighter development, FGFA.

The US developed the first stealth fighter decades ago, Russia was only delayed becuause of the fall of the Soviet Union, China will have the capability pretty much at the same time we get FGFA, the European countries skip this generation and jump right to NG unmanned aircrafts and that is what the US does now as well.

The future, especially in the strike role, lies in unmanned aircrafts!
Armed UAVs already has taken over CAS roles and real UCAVs like X 47, or Neuron will complement them at heavier strikes soon. That's why arming our indigenous, or exported UAVs with weapons like, LAHAT, or HELINA and the AURA UCAV development are way more important for the operational capabilities of IAF, then AMCA ever will be. Upgrading old and less capable Jags makes only sense if you want to use the time to get armed UAVs and AURA, otherwise simply replace most of them with LCA MK2, or MMRCAs.

Also the relation of AMCA and F35 is totally flawed!

The F35 was developed to be a more cost-effective 5. gen fighter than the F22 and because the US forces had a huge requirement to replace older fighters.
AMCA comes in a time when we already produce LCA, MMRCA and FGFA to replace older fighter and at least 5 to 7 years too early to replace MKIs. That means there is no real need for a fighter replacement, except of to remaining ground attack fighters.
AMCA also will have the same aerodynamic capabilities as FGFA and even the internal weapon carriage capabilities will be the same, if not inferior.
So what's the point in developing a fighter that is not needed, that comes very late in terms of generation again and don't offer a single operationally useful capability?

Even the F-35 with its single uber powerful 220 Kn engine cannot super cruise. The AMCA should be at least as large with two engines. Even if they increased the engines to 100 Kn it will not super cruise. Even the J 20 with it current 155 Kn engines are unlikely to have super cruise until it gets the 185 Kn Ws 15. Hope they realize this.

it depend no size not only by engine power. What is j-20 weight and amca weight then come to teach others

You know what you are right india should 1st conc. ON lca mk2,they 've still not fulfilled the requirements they promised for lca. But they should continue work on this may help.all the best to 'em.

6TH GEN TECH???:undecided: WHAT IS IT?

the "Next Generation Tactical Aircraft"/"Next Gen TACAIR"[4], the USAF seeks a fighter with "enhanced capabilities in areas such as reach, persistence, survivability, net-centricity, situational awareness, human-system integration and weapons effects," a November 4, 2010 presolicitation notice states. “The future system will have to counter adversaries equipped with next generation advanced electronic attack, sophisticated integrated air defense systems, passive detection, integrated self-protection, directed energy weapons, and cyber attack capabilities. It must be able to operate in the anti-access/area-denial environment that will exist in the 2030–50 timeframe.”[5][6] wiki

well i think Technological gaps will be filled on a faster rate as we have everything from every world...

it will not take long maybe by 2020 we will see , the first flight....

Unless it is half the weight of the F 22 then it can't reach super-cruise with those engines. Hopefully they resolve that

AMCA will be Medium class fighter plane (Fully loaded ~20 ton). F22 is heavy class fighter (fully loaded 30+ tonns). F22 has dry thrust of 104+104=208 Kn AMCA will have 52+52=104 (minimum) Kn dry thrust... Tell me now where you see the problem???? Rafael is also medium class fighter (20 ton) has engine with 50+50=100 KN dry thrust ... EFT has 60+60 KN drythrust ... So if these plane can super cruise , AMCA can also ... And more over Supercruise capability depends upon design as well... AMCA will be designed to supercruise...

Lets talk something bout supercruise...
Defination:Supercruise is sustained supersonic flight of an aircraft with a useful cargo, passenger, or weapons load performed efficiently and without the use of afterburners ("reheat").
Advantage : Supercruise is also an advantage for stealth aircraft, as an afterburner plume both reflects radar signals and creates a significant infrared signature.
Used in : F22 super cruise @ mach 1.7 , EFT super cruise @ mach 1.5, Rafael super cruise @ mach 1.3
