Ghulam Ali
The Shiv Sena on Wednesday demanded the cancellation of a concert in Mumbai featuring legendary Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali. "We will not allow Ghulam Ali to perform in Mumbai. We can't have cultural ties with Pakistan when they kill our soldiers," a Sena leader said.
The leaders of Sena's film wing, Chitrapat Sena, met officials at Mumbai's Shanmukhanand Hall demanding the cancellation of the Pakistani singer's show, scheduled on Friday. Shanmukhanand at Matunga is where the Sena holds most of its functions.
The Sena has been protesting against any form of cultural ties with Pakistan for long. Earlier, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party had protested against singer Atif Aslam's concert. It also opposes any cricketing ties with Pakistan.
The BJP, which runs the governments in Maharashtra and the Centre with Shiv Sena, however, said it does not agree with its partner's stand. "I see no problem with the event as long as the organisers have due permission for it," BJP spokesperson Shaina NC told India Today.
On Tuesday, the Shiv Sena demanded the Centre "show guts and attack Pakistan" in retaliation for the spate of terror attacks carried out from across the border in the recent times.
In a sharp edit in the party mouthpiece Saamana, the Sena said that recently, four Indian soldiers were martyred for killing one terrorist in Kupwara area of Jammu and Kashmir.
"The tragedy is that the terrorists are proving to be major challenge to the Indian security forces... Some Pakistani ministers and Hafiz Saeed keep threatening India at will and get away... But we just laugh it off," the Sena pointed out.
