‘Women Must Uncover Faces’ - Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabian authorities have rejected a conservative proposal to allow women to keep their faces covered during security checks, local media reported on Tuesday.

A draft law would have allowed women to continue wearing veils during the checks, and would have required their identity cards to be based on fingerprints instead of photographs, the Saudi Gazette said.

The Shura Council, a consultative body appointed by the king, rejected the plan on Sunday, although it agreed that female security staff should carry out checks on women, the newspaper reported. It did not say who had proposed the law.

Under Wahhabism, the branch of Sunni Islam practised in Saudi Arabia, men and women are largely segregated in public areas. Women need a male guardian’s permission to work, travel or open a bank account. (RTRS)

One is personal choice.

The other is forced. Well, atleast they are punished if they dont obey.

that is not personal choice. if any nun wants not to wear it she will be ousted.

She has the choice of becoming a nun and leaving at an time - within the 14 odd years of training or thereafter.

A muslim girl does not have a choice of being born muslim.

the attire is compulsory for a nun. what if one wants to become one and also marry and still dont want to wear it.

there is NO choice.

There is a choice. Don't become a nun. Or having become one, give up the habit.

These are religious positions. Even amongst Parsis, our Dasturs have a dress code.

Once in their civilian mode, they can dress in torn jeans and Crocs and ride bikes with long hair and tattoos.

I know one here in Pune who does.

what a silly comment from you.

Its silly why?

A muslim girl is supposed to wear this stuff.

Does she have a choice?

Not in Saudi she does not.

Does she have the choice of ceasing to be Muslim by free choice?

Sure. Just as others have the free choice to kill her for it.

Its a woman's choice to become a nun, meaning she agrees to wear the dress. If she doesn't want to, she is always free to leave the congregation.

That is not so in the case of Saudi women. If they dont wear the burqa they will be arrested and thrown in jail. Case in point, the death of 15 or so school children. Who weren't rescued from the fire because they weren't wearing the burqa !!

Most of these nuns wear Saris when they are not in their institutions doing their daily jobs.

BTW, these dress codes are also for men.

And if any of them wanna marry, they can always leave the congregation and then marry and settle down. Both men and women.

I know this because my dad wanted to become a priest. He gave 11 years for it, then met my mom. And then he quit and married her.

My mom's friend who was a nun, also fell in love with one of the jesuit priests she worked with. They left their congregation and married.

Those are nuns who take the habit voluntarily. There is no universal decree which demands women cover their heads except in church. And to be honest, most women dont even bother to cover their head in churches either. Times have changed, its good to stay relevant.

Renaissance happened a long time ago. Get on with the program.
