"India eludes China in race for gas riches"? Eh? 
As the article itself mentions, China is by far the largest economic trading partner of Central Asia.
We have a direct land border to Central Asia, and numerous pipelines including the Turkmenistan-China pipeline and the Kazakhstan-China pipeline already functioning (as they have been for many years already).
We also have a direct land border with Russia (which has the largest natural gas reserves) and just made a trillion-dollar gas deal with them.
We also have the world's largest domestic Shale gas reserves, enough to last for thousands of years.
When it comes to "gas" (both physical and metaphorical), we've got it.
