Indian media: Concerns over doping in sports
Last updated: 13 August 2013, 07:48 GMT

Media reports say experts are concerned over the rising number of doping cases in Indian sports after the world athletics body said the country had the second highest number of "dope cheats".

The International Association of Athletics Federations recently revealed that India was behind leaders Russia on the doping list with 43 athletes currently serving suspension.

The Daily Bhaskar website says the number is "embarrassing" given India's limited success in major international athletics events.

The director-general of the National Anti-Doping Agency, Mukul Chatterjee, said the rising number of doping cases "is a matter of concern".

"The government and the National Anti-Doping Agency are working towards dope free sports in the country in association with stakeholders to rid sports of this menace and create a clean and healthy environment for sports in India," The Times of India quoted Sports Minister Jitendra Singh as saying.

The Indian Express says "a majority of Indian athletes have been suspended for using banned steroids like stanozolol and methandienone".

India has 2nd highest number of dope cheats in sports; 43 cases in 2013

New Delhi: India has got the dubious distinction of being the country with the second highest number of doping cases of the athletes. According to International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), India ranks second with 43 cases of doping this year. With 44 cases, Russia tops the chart.

All the dopers were being suspended by the respective sports body. Shockingly, India was leaving the Russians behind with a lead of 8 till last month. However, the IAAF lifted nine suspensions recently, resulting to a equally embarrassing second position.

Mukul Chatterjee, director-general of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), told the Indian Express, "The number of positive cases in athletics is on the rise. Out of 30 sportspersons who failed dope tests from April to July this year, 10 are track and field athletes. The number of positive cases that have emerged in athletics over the last couple of years is a matter of concern."

A majority of Indian athletes have been suspended for using banned steroids like stanozolol and methandienone.

Well Said,,

Worst part being ,,sports men too have very less knowledge about the drugs they intake,,,lot of times we also need to blame the Trainers.

India's pharma industry can only make generic drugs.

WHo is No.1 in doping?

Russia.

My personal opinion, though, US and China probably use way more drugs than Russians and Indians. It is just that these countries are also BETTER at making drugs. Russians used to be the same way as well, but the collapse of USSR and the subsequent disorder has really taken a toll on the country.

You are referencing an article referring to events that occurred in the 1980's-1990's.

The desperation of the Indian sweetens my victory.

Obviously since you haven't achieved anything meaningful in life, your only sense of "victory" can come from posting sh!t about others.

.
In India only low-level athletes, People who can't compete properly against International opponents, take steroids and etc. But in some countries fringe players (National Record holders/ World Record holders) have done used them and some successfully evaded it like Lance Armstrong. It's those people who are a threat to the sports and not these grade-2 athletes who even after using performance enhancers fail to get past the qualification stages. Such people would do anything for a few minutes of glory.
