At a time when Job creation itself is in dire straits, Artificial Intelligence has not helped matters.
Tech giant Wipro is about to replace the task of at least 3,000 software engineers by an artificial intelligence (AI) tool. Wipro’s new AI wizard “Holmes” is all set to be introduced to automate certain projects that are going to free around 3,000 engineers from “mundane”software jobs, reports Varun Sood from Mint. The project is expected to save $46.5 million (approximately Rs 31 crore). The company is looking forward to strengthening its profitability at a time that is becoming more and more uncertain for outsourcing companies.

This AI platform will be used at the company’s ‘fixed-price’ projects that employ around 30,000 people. The company has a workforce of 1,10,000 people. CEO Abidali Neemuchwala told Mint, “We will move out 1,300 engineers from on-site [fixed price contracts] and about 2,000 people from off-site this year.” Along with Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) and Infosys Ltd have their own AI platforms called Ignio and Mana respectively. In a competitive market, every outsourcing companies are trying to boost their stream of revenues. It has been claimed that Holmes or “heuristics and ontology-based learning machines and experiential systems” can perform tasks more efficiently compared to humans, with lower chances of errors.

AI on the rise, Job creation on the fall
With more and more AI platforms are being introduced by different companies, it is creating more insecurity among the employees. Whatever product or services these companies are trying to develop will ultimately be purchased or used by humans. To look at a bigger picture, if the humans are replaced by AI, millions will become jobless as it can lead human jobs to dire straits.

The Logical Indian is uncertain what the future will unfold. Will Artificial Intelligence continue to replace jobs? We request the government to look into the matter and enact policies that will aid job creation.
