It's not about shutting down factories, there are many factories in Detroit that are near the detroit river or the lake, yet the lake here is very clean. The problem is that we don't regulate these factories really well, we need proper rules for these factories as to what is allowed to be discarded in the river.

No. These are usually done by the people who are around the area. It is horrible and this is another dimension of the problem that the north Indians face.

So you see, it is not just one minister's work alone that can solve this problem. It has to be a collective effort.

In Pakistan and India people do,not want to pay tax and even bother to stop at traffic signal and yet expect to get z+ security and A grade treatment from Government.River is holy are not but Governments in sub-continent are terrible when it comes to pollution control.

It is probably one of the cleanest small towns I have ever seen in north India. One expects this stuff in parts of my region, but to expect this in other region's states of India is quite remarkable.

Also, there has to be severe (undemocratic, if you allow me to say) fines on throwing litter like Rs. 5,000 even if you throw a small piece of paper on the road etc with incentives to cops so that they honestly do their duty.

If you visit Singapore or even Kuala Lumpur, you will get an idea what I am referring to.

It is an entire ecosystem that is designed to ensure strong public sense of hygiene. Whether people like it or not.

True, laws and fines are needed... but a change of thought and education on this matter are equally important. I dont think that politicians will do anything unless the people demand it... so its in our best interest to promote these things on our own!

Give up already.That river isn't going to be cleaned up anytime soon.Precious resources have been wasted over it for nothing.The money might be better used giving quality education to some from the masses,certainly a better use than wasting resources over a "holy river".

You know how much disdain it brings to the country? A dirty polluted Ganga is a health hazard to millions of people. It makes a mockery out of Clean India's image. Tourists see disgusting things floating around in our Holy river indirectly costing us thousands of potential tourists.

Was watching news last week, and there was a report of finding 23 bodies on ganges on a single day......Cleaning the ganga can be done by spending some money and manpower, but Maintaining the cleanliness is going to be a herculean task....Going to be further tough when religious sentiments are involved.....
