Will Israel be able to sell the Arrow system to India?

Elements within Israel’s industries believe that a change has occurred in the US position regarding the sale of the Arrow system to India following the weakening of the US’s special standing with the sub-continent.

A change in the position of the US may indirectly open a door for the export of the Arrow anti-missile system to India. The US is attempting to increase its influence in India after a series of failures. Now, Washington is attempting to sell systems to India for ballistic missile defense.

In the past, India showed interest in the Israeli Arrow system, but the US did not even allow the system to be shown to them. As is known, India purchased the Green Pine radar, which is a part of the Arrow system.

The US recently lost its special standing in India when two US aircraft were cast out of the competition for the selection of the new fighter for India’s air force. Presently, two fighters of European production remain in the competition. Washington is also concerned over the deep incursion of Israel's defense industries in India into fields that it used to control in the region.

Last week, the US announced it was willing to consider selling systems for intercepting ballistic missiles to India in order to assist India in defense against nuclear threats. Presently, China is the central threat to Asian countries.

The US began initial talks with India for the sale of missile-defense systems against ballistic missiles nearly three years ago; most of the talks were at a technical level.

According to analysts, the US hoped to sell the Patriot Pac-3 missile to India, however, India is more interested in building its own systems than procuring parts of them from the US, or alternatively, procuring systems with greater capabilities. One such system is the operational Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 that is presently in the advanced development stage.

Since the US is a partner in the development of the Arrow system by way of funding, and because Boeing produces some of the missiles in its factories, the Israel-US system may be presented after all.

“If India requests it, then it will be very difficult for the Americans to refuse, since they are part of the Arrow project and the changes in policy have created a new situation,” said an Israeli source well connected on the subject.

Israel is refusing to respond to such an assessment, but is considering it during deliberations.

India is also taking strides towards its own development of a missile-based system against ballistic missiles, but is currently only in initial development stages.

Interesting and confirming my view that the US is trying to get India on their side, to counter China! That's why their policy towards India changed in the last years and why they have to balance between Pakistan and India now, because they need both countries, although for different reasons.

Because missile defenses are so important, states like India and Israel have taken steps to ensure that they have the ability to build many of the key pieces. The Arrow project is a collaboration between Boeing and IAI to produce the missile interceptors that accompany the required radars, satellites, command and control systems.

Although India purchased an Arrow-capable “Green Pine” radar from Elta in 2001, and has expressed interest in deploying its own battery of Arrow interceptor missiles, U.S. concerns regarding compliance with the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR, an international agreement limiting the proliferation of ballistic missile technology) have effectively halted such plans for the time being. This did not stop India from using the Green Pine technology in its own November 2006 anti-missile test, using a modified Prithvi short-range ballistic missile with an exo-atmospheric kill vehicle and a hit to kill warhead.

The Arrow System

In general, the Israeli Arrow is a more advanced weapon than the Patriot and possesses far more range, undertaking high altitude interceptions and covering a wide area (est. 90km/ 54 mile range, maximum altitude 30 miles/ 50 km for Arrow 2) as a Theater Missile Defense (TMD) system.

Unlike the USA’s THAAD, PAC-3, or SM-3 which all use “hit to kill” technology, Israel’s Arrow relies on a directed fragmentation warhead to destroy enemy missiles.
It can work in conjunction with a number of systems, but its main Israeli partner is the Green Pine long-range, ground-based fire control radar. The system and its engagements are controlled by the mobile Citron Tree battle management center. Since the launchers are also mobile, and the radars are semi-mobile, the system is resistant to pre-emptive strikes if good discipline is maintained.

I also read the same, India was offered missile defence system from Russia and Israel but India is willing to have its own missile defence systems. I read about a year before that India is working with Israel for a credible missile defence but they are still developing it by themselves with taking ideas from Israel also for joint development, just one thing is changed now. :undecided:

I also read somewhere that Indian side was impressed with US’s missile defence system but they aren’t sure about its effectiveness so they prefer to have something by themselves, in place of importing it from other countries :what:

It might not be a bad idea to have 2 different ABM systems[one Indian{AAD and PAD} and Israeli/American/Ruso], in case one of them fails in the moment of reckoning. Better to be safe than sorry.

I was told about a year that India may have two layers of missile defence for its key cities like Mumbai, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Pune, Ahmadabad, Delhi, Itanagar, Kolkata etc. first one from US/ Israel and second layer by Indian own missile defence. The logic behind it says, even in case of failure of first layer, the next one will have better information about the incoming missiles/ aircrafts in war scenario.:what:

America wont give Arrow to India....the there will be demand from pakistna too
