Since 220 BC we were under one kingdom.
Religion and culture don't define a country. Entire middle east was islamic, but never one country. Same goes for Europe, Latin America.
Sovereignty defines a country. You cannot have 5 kings here and 6 emperors there, and call yourself One country.

US never fought in China. We were fighting Japs ourselves, for 8 years!!! After 1940, we actually re-gained more territories. US entry did speed up Japan's defeat.
