What's new

Will create new tax authority if FBR cannot be fixed, PM Khan warns

First step make taxation easy
Would be done by mid of this year

Second step go after big fishes
Notices sent

Third step punish jail and seize properties
Will see...this is the most imp step

Fourth digitizing of the economy

Fifth and the final step, the assistant, deputy and full collectors making under the table deals and giving clean chit to tax evaders like always - - - - - - -

We are treating symptoms not the disease itself.

I have a question for Imran Khan. Around an year ago Asad Umer said that they have prepared list of around 100 (or may be 1000) individuals who are super rich and not paying taxes. He said that we are going to send notices to them. I want to know the status and how much tax was collected from them.

A good move!!! Bring in automation!! It is in the league of the downing on the IAF mig....

An empty house is better than a bad tenant....

Is he the same person, who publicly used to tear of his own utility bills!?

Replacing FBR with what? The same people under a new name? Where can the thousands of people in such an organization be replaced overnight? Or does this mean changing only the people at the top of FBR, like was done with SNGPL? How would that improve anything? How can the FBR extend the tax net by itself without the law backing it up?
Well, now that depends how the "reforming" goes....

Iam pretty much sure that the bureaucrats will have the final say in drafting any such reform bill.

Like they made it a law that provincial anti corruption departments are only supposed to be headed by a guy from Pakistan administrative services . So no one gets nab from the same service except some rankers and clerks - - - -
hmmm....yea lately even I was surprised by the type of bills coming out ..

Excellent move... Imran Khan is serious on fixing the tax collection system

They have talented staff, but the problems are deep rooted.

I thought restructuring it would be fine, but maybe there are other ingrained issues in terms of policies and leadership that make it just easier to replace it?

As pointed out above, let us see what is actually done to reform this vital agency.

The basic problem is that the entire system, from top to bottom, and left to right, is designed to divert state resources for the personal gains of a select few. And they are the ones in charge. Why would they allow any effective change in this exploitative system that has served them so well over decades, across many changes of government?
