The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said on Wednesday that Wikipedia services had been degraded in the country for 48 hours for not "blocking/removing sacrilegious content".

In a statement, the telecom regulator said it had approached Wikipedia — a free online encyclopedia — for blocking/removing the content in question by issuing a notice under "applicable law and court order(s)".

"An opportunity of hearing was also provided, however, the platform neither complied by removing the blasphemous content nor appeared before the authority," the PTA statement said.

. . . . .
Did someone edit Hazrat Bajwa Ahle Salam or Hazrat Zardari Ahle Salam's profile to post some undesirable facts?
I read somewhere that it is related to Prophet Mohammed's pictures. The images are medieval paintings in museums. They are in many books. Taking offense to them is pointless as Wikipedia is documenting and discussing this debate. It is like saying someone writing about the controversy over Salman Rushdie's book is himself guilty of some offense. Blocking Wikipedia simply hurts a lot of Pakistani students and others that may need free information that is readily available. It also points to the sense of priority for the government. That it can engage in pointless controversy when there are critical issues at stake.
