The US has been spying on Japanese cabinet officials, banks and companies, including the Mitsubishi conglomerate, whistleblowing website Wikileaks says.

Documents released by Wikileaks list 35 telephone numbers targeted for interception by the US National Security Agency (NSA).

The surveillance extends back at least eight years, Wikileaks said.

Wikileaks has previously released files showing the US spied on Germany, France and Brazil - like Japan, all allies.

There has been no comment from Japan on the latest claims.

'Five-Eyes group'
A Wikileaks statement said the latest revelations "demonstrate the depth of US surveillance of the Japanese government".

The documents, marked "top secret", reportedly show that the US was listening in on conversations at Japanese government ministries and offices.

Wikileaks says the US was aware of Japan's internal discussions on issues such as trade talks, climate change policy and nuclear and energy policy - as well as the contents of a confidential briefing in Prime Minister's Shinzo Abe's residence.

The US also reportedly spied on Bank of Japan officials and on the fossil fuel departments at Japanese firms Mitsubishi and Matsui.

Wikileaks says the NSA shared the information it had gathered with Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand - the so-called "Five Eyes" group.

. . .
It will be strange, America didn't spy on some country, and they always accuse other country for doing this without evidence.
Are they too stupid to find evidence or they just have too many illusions?

Let me play as devil's advocate here; every nation spies. The Americans are paying for this in PR losses due to the wikileaks. Next time they should be more "secure" in how they conduct intelligence gathering. A lesson for them in not being too sloppy or at least induct intelligence officers and support personnel that may be suspect.

I'm sure, well very sure (lol), that the Japanese side is more professional in our intelligence gathering processes.

:)

Yeah, I know everyone play spy games. I just say, if everyone play it, America should have some standard, not always act like the biggst victim, while America is the biggst evil. America accuse only other country doing it without evidence, and never talk about their own dirty work.

Sure, buddy, i agree with you. I think that their NSA is just 'pissed' because Snowden literally threw the NSA under the bus, so to say. I think this issue is a lesson for foreign intelligence wings to keep their operatives in check, and make sure their loyalties are not suspect.

Are we all dumb spies??

lol, sometime it is about counter intelligence, or why you would only hear about US spying on allies and friends. But not hostile country like Cuba, Russia or North Korea?

If I were in the position of intercepting this kind of communique, would I be also able to intercept Spying cable network on Iran, North Korea or Cuba?

I just know this, If I were to leak something and perform a integrity test, I would leak only information that can create limited damage. Think about this, if we are running on a system of everybody is spying on everybody, would it make a better headline saying "NSA spies on China or Russia" or "NSA spies on Japan?"

This is something one should think about.

Without evidence? Or just revealing sources? Because wikileaks is revealing what America is doing. Too bad other countries don't have their own Snowden yet. Or do they?

US spying agencies becoming dumber day by day... Huh...

Long live Japan-US alliance. When you have a friend like the US regime, who would need enemies?
