"I will never apologize for the United States – I don't care what the facts are ... I'm not an apologize-for-America kind of guy," said then Vice President George H. W. Bush in 1988, after America shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing all 290 people on board. Bush was an American patriot, and like most U.S. presidents, he used his patriotism as an excuse for killing thousands of people worldwide.

U.S. politicians love claiming they are "American patriots" or that they "love" America, often ending their speeches with the classic "God bless America" (if only this one worked during the pandemic).

Yet, the West is an extreme case, where love for one's country often translates into deaths in others. But what about other countries? Are lawmakers in other countries allowed to be patriots?

Union Jacks

China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) witnessed protests in 2019 which were a combination of multiple factors, including genuine grievances with Hong Kong's economic system created by the British and forces backed by the CIA and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) that have meddled in Hong Kong's affairs for decades.

Protesting peacefully has almost never been a problem in Hong Kong. The law allows it. The police allow it. Most protesters with genuine grievances did march peacefully and accepted that the Hong Kong government was best equipped to handle Hong Kong's problems – and not some genocidal war-mongering regime at the other end of the globe.

The radical protesters disagreed. They openly called for U.S. sanctions against their own city. They openly waved the U.S. flag (while burning their own country's flag) and sang the U.S. anthem. They stormed the LegCo building, smashed the furniture, and as the world watched in utter shock, actually unfurled the Union Jack and the colonial flag inside the legislature.

This was the result of a long process of grooming of these youth by the U.S. regime. Many were chosen specifically to portray their fight as a "David vs. Goliath" struggle – the typical youthful, innocent dreamers versus the malicious, evil state. Many of them fell for America's false promises, assuming that the third-grade U.S. system would solve Hong Kong's problems.

Lawmaker compradors

Over the years, a few of these radicals and their supporters have infested Hong Kong's electoral system. They often betray the trust of the people who elect them, whether by uttering Sinophobic swear words during their oath-taking ceremonies, or by proudly proclaiming their support for murderous Western regimes, or indeed, by supporting violence and murder at home. They are largely shills of the U.S., openly advocating for Hong Kong to adopt the morbid norms of U.S. neoliberal, capitalist "democracy."

The best of Hong Kong should govern it, not people who are so easily influenced by weaker U.S. ideologies and easily swayed by U.S. money. Thus, it is hardly a surprise that China will no longer allow Hong Kong's legislature to be corrupted by compradors.

Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, recently advocated the need for "patriots running Hong Kong." He said that patriots are bound to sincerely safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, and respect the fundamental system of the state.

At its core, this is a fairly ordinary idea and a very basic, mundane and uncontroversial concept: that only people who love their city should be allowed to run it.

Yet, this is China, where even the slightest display of patriotism – whether waving the Chinese flag or the popularity of the Wolf Warrior franchise – is blown out of proportion by Western media and depicted as "nationalism" or a "crackdown on dissent."

Western media are portraying this announcement as they portray every announcement of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office: as a threat to Hong Kong's "freedoms."

In truth, it is the West that has good reason to feel threatened. The idea of patriotism for Hong Kong's politicians is daunting since it will make the city less susceptible to U.S. influence operations. It will greatly reduce the West's ability to cultivate assets within the HKSAR government. A lawmaker who loves their country would be less susceptible to betraying it for another.

As for civil rights, this development neither means the end of dissent, nor of healthy, good-faith opposition. Hong Kong's political system allowed peaceful dissent earlier, and it will allow it still. Yet, disagreeing with your government does not mean agreeing with America's. Protesting against your government does not mean shilling for the American one.

This is something I'll never understand. I'm supposed to be proud about being an American because patriotism is good. But if I'm proud of my Chinese heritage people start staring suspiciously.

If you say 'Buy American,' you are a patriot. If you say 'Buy Chinese,' you are a nationalist.

That's why we should do as they do, not as they say.

The Hong Kong opposition are fools when they collaborate themselves with outside forces and ask for their interference. It will take away their legimental and support.

That's probably why the Central government did not move a finger when young dogs, unleashed by NED etc. were busy chanting genocidal regime's star spangled banner and angrily attack the police.

The worst part is many hong konger went to street to support such foolish adventure. And there isn't any opposition party come out to denounce the waving of foreign flag and asking of foreign support.

If I am hong Kong government. I will start a massive housing campaign with land reclaimation to build up more flat land. Government subsidize house will be build and sold to needy. But they must signed a decoration of loyalty to China and sing national anthem before received the house key. If they are involved in anti-China activities. The state had the right to confiscate their government houses.

Shows those people are easily manipulated or taken control of. Even in one of the best and richest cities in the world it was easy to incite people. China is a time bomb.

Colonialism is a state of mind. Mainland just is getting readier to erase it. Till now, it was patiently waiting. First, amass power. Then, hit.

The electoral system of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) needs improvement to keep pace with the times for the full implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" and the "patriots governing Hong Kong" principle, Zhang Yesui, spokesperson for the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), told a press conference on Thursday.

The NPC will deliberate a draft decision on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR during the upcoming session, according to the agenda.

The electoral system of the HKSAR is an important part of its political structure, Zhang stressed.

He said what happened in recent years has proven the necessity to "improve the system in step with the times in order to provide a sound institutional guarantee for fully and faithfully implementing 'One Country, Two Systems' and fully implementing the principle of 'patriots governing Hong Kong.'"

Zhang noted that the NPC, China's top legislature, has the power and responsibility to make a decision at the constitutional level to improve the electoral system of the HKSAR.
Chinese central authorities have recently solicited opinions from people of different backgrounds in Hong Kong, with the aim of improving the city's electoral system.

'Patriots governing Hong Kong'

A senior Chinese official's recent words on the "patriots governing Hong Kong" principle have been echoed widely by various Hong Kong sectors, reiterating the urgent need to make more efforts to ensure Hong Kong is governed by patriots.

The "patriots governing Hong Kong" principle means that Hong Kong, which returned to the motherland in 1997, must be governed by patriots and the power of the HKSAR must be in the hands of patriots, Xia Baolong, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and head of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said in a symposium last month
The first criterion, Xia said, is that patriots must sincerely uphold the nation's sovereignty, security and development interests. They must not conduct activities endangering national sovereignty and security, which is the bottom-line criterion.
He clarified that this did not mean banning all opposition members from the HKSAR government.

Chief Executive of the HKSAR Carrie Lam defended Xia's remarks, saying the "patriots governing Hong Kong" principle was substantial to sustaining the principle of "One Country, Two Systems."

Noting since Hong Kong's return, whenever the city deals with controversial issues, some people will make remarks that stir up hatred against the central and local governments, Lam said. "It was crystal clear that we had reached a stage where the central government had to take action," she added.
The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce of the HKSAR released a statement on Thursday saying only after the "patriots governing Hong Kong" principle is upheld, can "One Country, Two Systems" be comprehensively and accurately implemented and will anti-China disrupters be prevented from damaging Hong Kong's governance and stability in the long run.

Priscilla Leung Mei-fun, a member of the HKSAR Basic Law Committee under the National People's Congress Standing Committee, also said only by letting patriots exercise the governing power, can Hong Kong be truly well governed, integrate its development into the overall development of the country and create a bright future.

Most of Hong Kong residents support "patriots governing Hong Kong," said Lo Man-tuen, vice chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, in a recent symposium. Lo expressed the hope for plugging loopholes in the electoral and other systems as soon as possible to ensure the governing power of Hong Kong is in the hands of patriots.

Electoral loopholes

Speaking to CGTN, He Junzhi, vice president of Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, explained what these loopholes are.

He pointed out the Hong Kong electoral system cannot guarantee the fair drawing of voting districts, not to mention elections.
The HKSAR geographical constituency adopts a proportional representation system, which is an electoral system that's only suited for the national level. However, Hong Kong is a city, He pointed out, and under such a system, the election results are very fragmented. "Extreme forces can be easily encouraged. Public opinion cannot be consolidated through elections."
He also said the election of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) and the electoral committee for the chief executive are based on the functional constituency, which are out of date.

In addition, He also noted the rule of ensuring governance by patriots protected by the Constitution and the Basic Law has not been well refined and implemented yet. "In fact, this is the basic responsibility of any administration; however, it's far from being done in Hong Kong."

Pretty bad approach to explain the matter. The emphasis should be placed on the veracity of the oath of office and upholding of the city's Constitution instead of undermining it. And that should serve as the basic requirement for any legislature anywhere in the world. HK's constitution's article 23 is more encompassing than the national security law, a constitution which the past legislature failed to abide by. For that they should be removed.

They all can dance the kongo under the lamp posts.

After they squeal out all the details of the financing they gotten from NED and 5 Eyes and those directly paying them.

Testifying in public as to those sordid details of betrayals might be a way they need not dance.

Hong Kong is rich but even has more poor. More than 50% families in Hong Kong can't afford to buy basic housing and resort to high rental of house.

In fact, HK hasn't growth much for 2 decades. The worst is those middle class benefit from high housing price as land or house lord support the protest. They are beating the hand that help their wealth.

Now CPC will decide to show no mercy to those house and land owner. CPC main problem is to solve HK housing problem or bring down housing prices to be more attainable for masses. The pocket of those landlord will be hit but the need of lower income people cannot be ignored too.

On behalf of 70 countries, a representative of Belarus to the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council expressed support to China’s implementation of “one country, two systems” in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and urged certain countries to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs.

West views those who don't buy into 2 party system of tories vs labour or dems vs reps as a danger to democracy.

"Democracy" means nazi-leaning zionist Davos bankers run your country.

Look at the reaction to Corbyn and Sanders - if you are a populist for the poor and against the MIC... you are "un-democratic". For peace and spreading the prosperity is the enemy of these warmongers.
