I used to drive an '86 CJ-7 with a 4-speed manual. So yeah...I know a few things about Jeeps, including the Wrangler. That made me chuckle, wth is a non wrangler offroader anyways .
Fj will always be a pretender, you just dont have to make it so obvious by inventing the term "non-wrangler"..chuckle again.
The FJ does not need to be a 'pretender'. There are plenty of Youtube vids on how capable off-road is the FJ in ways that there is no need to compare it against the Wrangler and be tagged as a 'pretender'. I my cross country CONUS runs, I drove my '89 Toyota 22RE PU twice, my CJ-7 once, an inline 4L Wrangler twice, my '07 Grand Cherokee thrice, and my current FJ once. Off road, I been with my Toyota PU, the CJ-7, and the Grand Cherokee. The Wrangler sets the standards, but that does not mean others cannot meet those standards and stand alone.
I did some research, then a co-worker married a Toy tech who used to modify FJ for desert racing so after I talked to him I bought the '10. Am cheap so I will never buy a new car, except if I win the Powerball. Right now, you can buy a new 2020 FJ, except it will have to be from the ME.You should see how an old FJ runs , the thing needs muscles to shift and the steering is horrendous.
