'Why should families of soldiers who die for country be compensated?' asks UP official

And they expect the soldiers family to starve?

It's a bit more complicated than that. They get compensation from the central government but sometimes the family & neighbours push for more from the state government using the threat of media outrage, Some state governments buckle under the pressure & offer something which they then cannot follow through on because it would open a pandora's box. Other state governments get pressurised because someone will point to compensation offered by some other state government & demand the same.

I'm not sure what the official meant here but this is something that needs a better understanding.

.
Then a politician makes an announcement to gain popularity points
that the Family of the deceased soldier
will be given LAND or petrol pump by the State government

The subject here relates to an idiot asking why should a slain soldier's family be compensated .
So it is better that Government of India ENHANCES the Cash compensation
so that such false promises are not made

Everything thats given to his family is compensation for the loss. Increased cash compensation also amounts to the same.

Now, with regard to not being able to provide land. Each time the Govt acquires a farmers land for development by the local authority - NOIDA, Gr NOIDA or any other besides cash compensation a 500 sq Yard plot is also given to the farmer. This he conveniently sells once the colony develops and gets an amount close to what the Govt gave him for the land he lost. In effect he gets compensated twice. I do not question this.

The Govt then develops & sells the acquired farmland at a huge profit.

Why can a similar plot not be given to the NOK of the deceased ? It is after all a piece of land the Govt was selling for profit ?

There are many options, but remarks by the babus like these show the psyche of the nation. Moreso when no Politician asks him to shut up.

Land is getting scarcer by the day in India
It is just not possible to give land to each soldier

Secondly Soldiers are Also Central Government employees and servants

The terms and conditions of their service INCLUDING Compensation
is ALL written down and is enhanced regularly

A state government has NO duty to give compensation to a central government employee

Yet soldiers are also sometimes given some cash compensation by the State governments;
especially for Political purpose ; when something BIG happens such as Kargil

The only way out is for the Central government to enhance the compensation package
so that the soldier's Family does not have to look towards the state government at all

Central government does not own any land other than Railway land
Cantonments ; National Forests ; Mines ; PSU colonies

The soldiers family wants the land in his village

That is possible only if the State government has some vacant land in that
village

Also land allotment becomes a political hot potato
With similar demands raised elswhere

Because in Rural India ; Land is a status symbol
