What's new

Why Russia and India do not have consumer electronics companies like China does?

Lenevo got everything from IBM......where is innovation?

Hisense bought Toshiba. Lenovo bought Fujitsu and Motorola. GM bought Opel and Holden and Vauxhall. Ford bought Volvo and Mazda. What's your point? Acquisitions are fair and square.

Intel Arizona is in Phoenix, a metro area of 5 million, next to Chandler, one of the richest suburbs in the Phoenix area. It is literally across the street from 2500+ sq ft mansions.

You can even see some of the pools of the houses next to the (new) fab. The old Intel fab, still in use, is across from an elementary school. No rivers nearby either.

Chandler is a fab not a PCB/PCA house. Intel has fabs in Washington, Oregon, Arizona and New Mexico.

PCB factories use less quantity and less toxic chemicals than fabs. In addition PCB wastewater is mostly metal ions that are easy to sequester while fab wastewater can contain everything from "standard" metal ions to toxic anions such as fluorides (from HF) to organic pollutants such as organic nitrogen, strong acids, peroxides, etc which require oxidation or anion exchange resins.

Both have equal wastewater treatment requirements. One is clearly far harder than the other.

If you notice carefully two of Intel's fabs are in states with a lot of rainfall and water (OR, WA). Two of Intel's fabs are in dry states (AZ, NM).

The value proposition of the Intel fabs is much higher than the PCB factories.

More PCB factories are mid sized businesses with 10s to 100s million revenue because they require less (but not zero) startup capital. There's no SME semiconductor fab.

None of that changes the end result: US electronics are unprofitable in general not because of lack of trying or environmental concerns but because they're simply uncompetitive and bad at business.

compaq took Intel microprocessors, Western Digital hard drives and Microsoft Windows operating systems. They glued them together. They did a better job than other PC vendors.

I thought HP bought Compaq
And then resold to Acer.
